    Hi guys,

I stripped the charger back to metal several months ago and epoxy primed before doing my filler work.

I noticed when doing a little filler work up around the c-post/roof that there seemed to be very light very small 1mm pockets of corrosion. so i started to bring it back a bit further to see how much there was and i think the whole roof might be like this..

Off i went and checked the Data sheet for the primer and I says suitable for non sanded metal.

So where does that leave me. is that the source of this corrosion or something else. what do you guys think

should i sand it all back off and get different primer..

yea, most epoxies arent made for bare metal surfaces as you;ll see them suggesting you use an etching primer first, but skil all that and sand it back down and apply an epoxy thats direct to metal

“most epoxies aren’t made for bare metal” What the heck are you talking about??? The only epoxy I know that wants an etch primer first is ppg for their dp epoxies that are crap.We paint lots of big rigs that are stripped to bare aluminum and we use epoxy wet on wet. There are many epoxies that can go on bare metal, maybe you need to broaden your horizons and look at some better materials.Personally I would strip one panel at a time with 80 grit do your bodywork on the bare metal, epoxy prime and 2k primer.

yeah, the whole point of epoxy is for bare metal…..anything from cars to bridges to ships. its the best possible thing you could put on the metal BUT there are many different epoxy primers out there of all different grades. if you have rust pimples starting under the epoxy then you primed over some light rust and its simply growing so you can now see it. you need to strip the whole affected area with 80 grit, clean it well so its completely rust free and epoxy it again. a good epoxy will have great corrosion protection and should choke off rust. if its crappy primer then you should get some good stuff and throw the other out. you want a true epoxy not one of those 1 step high build epoxy/urethane hybrids.

Ya epoxies are made for bare metal. even PPG’s dplf is fine for bare metal. before they made it lead free dp was about one of the best epoxies around. i prefer an etch before epoxy but that is just my personal choice

    Did you use paint stripper?
Sounds like what can happen if it’s not cleaned completely off before painting.

Also, as far as epoxy goes, some strictly say not to use over etch.
