Seems like several companies offer factory packaged single stage urethanes but I don’t recall seeing base coat (other than maybe black or white) It would be nice if someone did an assortment of maybe 15-20 colors,,,,seems like they could sell a bunch if it was decent stuff at a decent price– Anyone know of a company who has factory packaged base coat?
February 17, 2010 at 3:38 am #19605Alot of companies do offer factory pack, but it is usually for a color that contains a unusual toner that isn’t on a mixing bank. Also some companies offer very popular colors in factory pack but it is usually black or different whites.
Most companies have a custom color line of paint with nice looking colors, but they are mixed off of a mixing bank like all other colors.
When it comes down to it all colors are mixed with different toners, it just if the jobber or manufacture is mixing it.
February 17, 2010 at 3:21 pm #19612hok is all factory pack and have a ton of colors and effects. sem as well.
I saw that TCP Global has a factory packaged base coat line called Restoration Shop—144 colors at around $100-$120 a gallon —I need to repaint my old pickup this spring— It is two-tone maroon and silver,,It doesn’t need to be top of the line stuff,,,but I don’t really want to fight with a lot of poor coverage and metallic control issues either—The guy a NAPA said Crossfire base is around $175 a gallon does anyone know how this Restoration Shop stuff compares with Crossfire,Omni, Nason?
February 25, 2010 at 4:06 am #19730Don’t know about the TCP but Crossfire metallics can be a bit tricky to spray, but they work and can save you some money vs. Tec Base. Some colors are great some colors are a nightmare. I’ve used a ton of the stuff.
The last time I did some paint work on this same pickup about 8 years ago—I repainted most of one side,, for the maroon I had Tec-Base the silver was Crossfire–The maroon went on perfect no problems at all—the silver Crossfire mottled and I had to respray it, better the second time but not that great — I really don’t want to fool with it again–Maybe Matrix would be a good alternative????
February 25, 2010 at 6:47 am #19736i believe the restoration shop stuff is relabeled omni or some type of super econo ppg stuff. if yo uneed a specific color or paint code look into matrix or prospray. prospray covers really well, good metallic control, its a good polyester base and price is really good. when i built my shop they were trying to get their system in here and i had it down to either them or rm. if you decide on it and have noone local let me know and i have a jobber friend that will ship to you.
I have heard good things about ProSpray —I can get the maroon color in ProSpay for about $90 a qt and the silver for about $60 a qt —The truck I will be painting is a 1990 full size 8ft bed regular cab Chevy—Maroon upper and lower and silver center section—I wont be painting the jambs or inside the bed–Do you think 1 qt of silver and 2qts of maroon will get it covered using ProSpray? I spray base with an HVLP gun that doesn’t seem to waste much paint (low overspray)
Thanks
February 25, 2010 at 8:13 am #19738if a fine to medium silver then i would say yes for that but for the maroon i would play it safe and get another quart. you may be fine with 2 but it will be close. there is always more square footage on a truck than appears to be. keep in mind i am bad at estimating paint amounts.
