Got a boat to paint, it needs some fiberglass repair and my question is how long do i wait after the repair before I overcoat it?

I assume you are using standard fiberglass resin. By the time the repair is complete (ground, maybe filled/blocked) you can apply your primer. Your best bet is to apply a coat of Epoxy, then some urethane primer-surfacer. Paint anything above the water line like anything else.

    Thanks Ben,

The reason I asked was that I saw on another boat that was repaird that it had some bubbles and also this one has some.
Could that be water still trapped?

What was bubbling? The fiberglass, or the primer/paint? Could be several possibilities. Fiberglass wicks up water and should never get wet. The epoxy primer is a real must to seal it properly.

This one seems to be the primer paint, but the other one was the fiberglass.

If the fiberglass was bubbling, then it probably got water into it somehow (improper repair, repair got wet before priming, or damage allowed water in after the repair).

If the paint was bubbling, then that would be user error, most likely. Or a low quality paint that was submerged in water, perhaps. If the boat will be moored in the water all the time, it should have proper marine paint or gel coat, particularly below the water line.

I had a blister problem with a ‘glass Corvette hood. I was using a flexible polyester spot putty at the time because I had been doing a lot of flexible motorcycle parts, maybe my repair let off some gas after I puttied it, dontno, but I quit using flexible putty on fiberglass. I redid the hood and it has been gone for a year.
