So ive been trying out different fillers from the cheapest to the top, but for the fillers ive tried a $20 a gallon from my paint store, and its not bad for cheap jobs but its hard to sand, and clogs up the sand paper especially on the couple strokes and hard to spread at times and mixing could also be a pain, but ive also tried Rage Ultra and that one was 10 times easier to sand than what i was using, it spread and mixed so much easier, there was no clogging of my paper and pin holing was not a problem to me, which for the cheap was mandatory for a skim of putty over it. Another that ive used is the Quantnum 1, and this stuff is amazing! i love it, it sands effortlessly, and mixed, spread with out a problem, i was amazed by how easy it sanded, i used 1/4 of the sand paper that i would with the cheap stuff, and im almost sold to this filler, the down side is, you have to buy the harderner sepreate. i say i like it better then the ultra so far.
As for putties, i have tried only two, so far but have been wanting to try the U-Pol Dolhpin glaze as soon as im through with my last batch of Evercoat Metal Glaze and Easy Sand. ive hear a lot of good things about it. but as far the the two that i have tried, Metal Glaze is easy to mix and spread, sanding is fairly easy, after sanding the sticky and clogging coat that i had to do with a couple passes with 80 grit. It has a nice build to it. The Easy Sand i started using was because the clogging of my sand paper caused by the Metal Glaze, it sanded easier and didnt have the sticky coat that the Metal Glaze did. As for the spreading and mixing it was slightly better but not much of a difference.
The next filler that ill be using is the 3M Platinum Plus and will post here as soon as i do and as well for the Dolphin Glaze, or if anyone has some other products that they feel are a great buy let me know and i will look into them, im a noobie and not sided to one product, im just trying to find the best products that will make my job easier and go by faster. My reviewing may be a little choppy and missing some info, but thought it would be help for some people who are starting out just like me or even some pro’s (which i doubt lol 😛 :rofl ) to see opinions/reviews from a beginner.
Thank you.
December 5, 2012 at 6:20 am #39678Marson(3M)Platinum is better than the Platinum Plus. I like it better than Rage Gold, especially the price. Never tried Ultra. Most popular does not always mean the best.
December 5, 2012 at 6:49 am #39682Yeah I know, I don’t go off of popularity , I read a lot of descriptions and reviews, what’s the difference between platinum plus and platinum?
December 5, 2012 at 8:21 am #39685Marson/3m regular platinum is nicer than the plus or any evercoat product IMO.
December 5, 2012 at 4:43 pm #39688x3 on the platinum. I’ve used the ultra and wasn’t impressed over the platinum. They performed very similar……but the cost difference was about $10. Platinum is cheaper, for me.
The dolphin glaze is a very nice glaze. I’ve been using the 3m platinum plus glaze lately and happy with it. Don’t think you can go wrong with either. Both are nice than evercoat metal glaze.
December 6, 2012 at 7:45 am #39705I will have to try the regular platinum soon than, it shows that a lot of you guys like it. Is there a big difference or what’s the reason why the platinum is better then the plus?

I’ll be trying dolphin next, I was thinking about the platinum putty or even quantum but the price on quantum is outrageous
December 6, 2012 at 7:59 am #39708The platinum sands, spreads better, more of a neutral color, less pinholes.IMO most of the evercoat products today are overpriced and not that great, how many new fillers have they come out with recently that all blow 😉
December 7, 2012 at 4:27 am #39717Yea, I wasn’t to happy with the ultra but I have no complaints about quantum, I tried the platinum plus today as it was the one i had already and I loved the way it spread, it seemed to mix fairly easy but sort of had a hard time see when it was all mixed as it only slightly changed the color of it, I didn’t see any pin holes which is good, it sanded nicely as well , featheredged easily too, but it was clogging my sand paper which I hate. Not sure if ill buy more plus, but might give the regular platinum a try. Has anyone ever tried the U-Pol filler such as Fantastic or the USC pro 7 I think it is?
December 7, 2012 at 4:58 am #39719If it was plugging your paper and hardly changed color you didn’t put enough hardener in it,the blue hardener will turn it green(sands easy with no clogging of the paper). As far as other fillers I have tried evercoat rage/rage extreme, rage gold, quantum, upol fantastic, monarch gold, usc cromate lite, pro 7,easy sand, all sorts of stuff I can’t even remember. In short I have found nothing that works as nice as platinum in 25 years,my go to combo is platinum with dolphin glaze.

At first that’s what the problem was so I added more to it, but didn’t want to add too much, I do a line across or so depending on how much filler I have, I will give it another try tomorrow, that’s really the only complaint I have, I loved how smoothly it spread and after the clogging it sanded pretty nice. Over all it was a nice product, I’ll have to give the regular platinum a try, I’m just trying to find out which one better suits me, and makes my job easier. I’ll be giving the dolphin glaze a try also. That’s definitely my next product.
How is fantastic? And the pro 7?
December 7, 2012 at 5:50 am #39722Go with the regular platinum. the plus is a little thin. the platinum builds better and sands easy.
