I recently painted a Sunbeam with PPG and I got a good amount of Fish eyes in a couple of panels. So the next day I clean out my booth and made sure I clean the panel more thoroughly. Shop a couple of parts in BC/CC and everything has been fine. Now today I shot a couple of Hoods with SW and they fish eyed about the same as the sunbeam. I’m only getting fish eyes in Single Stage paints, Can anyone explain whats going on :teach ?

Clean the fish eye areas pretty well, sand them down as best as possible… use a waterborne primer-sealer next (this can be top coated easily). Use a non-chemical cleaner so it does not react to the lacquer. You should be OK to paint after that.

Go easy on your first coat of single stage.

I’ve been cleaning the parts/Panels with a solvent cleaner and then I follow that up with a waterbased cleaner ( That wouldn’t cause any problems). First coat is always a tack coat ( Light coat).

Skip the waterborne cleaner or use it first followed by solvent cleaner.Sounds strange but you need some flashtime after the waterborne cleaner or blow the panel off.Waterborne cleaner can cause fisheyes if coated too soon.If you try without it I bet your problems will go away :stoned

I always clean with waterborne then solvent, Waterborne can cause fish eyes if some is still on the panel,

Ok I’ll spray a test panel tomorrow and only solvent clean it and we’ll see what happens.
