    Hi Guys,

I’ve got a buddy who had his motorcycle tank keyed. He wants me to fix it up for him and I said sure – why not. Here’s my plan, fill the scratches with some flowable filler and sand it out. Then sand the entire tank, hit it with 2K primer and shoot the colour.

Is this the rigt way to fix key marks?

    What do you guys think?

No you do not want to fill the scratch with filler. After some time in the sun you will be able to see the repaired areas.

Here is how I would do it:

Sand out the entire scratch and feather out with 180 on a DA. Sand out past the 180 area with 320. Prime with a DTM 2k Primer. Guide coat, sand and then paint.

Basically the proper method is exactly what Jimmo shows here:

Agreed with both above. Never fill a scratch with bodyfiller. Really you shouldn’t ever put bodyfiller over paint. Companies like evercoat say you can but there isn’t a paint company out there that will recommend that procedure. There is a good chance it will end up mapping down the road.

catch the one that keyed it , remove all remaining paint with their teeth and finger nails and 400 wet sand with their blood

    I agree with the above.

Filler is ok for a quick fix on a job you don’t care abut, but to do it properly means feathering out 🙂

    Thanks Stone…sounds like a plan.

Feather feather feather do not fill unless the scratch has dented the panel… on hoods and trunks sometimes its better to r&i the part and strip it with aircraft stripper.. I have a 08 dodge charger in one shop and a little honda in the other that are so bad we will be stripping most of the car to do it right..if this site keeps working for me in the next few days I will get some pics up..

on keyed paint you MUST go to bare metal an i mean must as long as you do that you wont have no problems no matter how ya fill it back up you will find when your sanding an think ya got it all gone just b4 ya break thruogh to the metal that youll hit a 16th inch strip where the paint aint stuck thats what comes back an haunts ya first time ya park it out in the sun dont ask me how i know but ive done just a few an thats what i was taught back in the day when we used ta use lauqer same still applys with 2k products :teach

Thanks Bondo – I’ll be doing a closer inspection on the weekend. Down to metal it is then build it back up with epoxy and 2K, then paint. There is a special place in hell for those that key paint.
