I am working on a 63 vette, stripped down to bare FG. Everywhere I ask people say use evercoat super build..what happened to using gel coat??. One guy I know says don’t waste my time if I don’t gel coat. What technical data is there that supports the polyester senerio.?. Or the Epoxy ?
October 15, 2012 at 9:58 pm #38646gel is a waste of time if you’re going to paint it in the end. The only reason to use gel coat is if you’re using a mold and the surface will be exposed at the end.
Any time I make a quick mold for a part that will be painted I actually use poly primer as my first layer in the mold. then I just pop it and sand away.
October 15, 2012 at 11:27 pm #38650I just don’t want to have a comeback because fiberglass is popping thru the primer. There’s really not a lot of fiberglass repair to be done, so I’m fortunate there. I was just looking for solid info on the epoxy or polyester to back up my my decision .. Thanks

Evercoat has a fiberglass reinforced poly primer. might be good for this one

October 16, 2012 at 1:46 am #38655My process for those vettes has always been epoxy then a poly primer over bare glass. Now you will get varying opinions on using the epoxy…whatever floats your boat.
But poly primer has pretty much taken the place of using gel coat over the bare glass. Fiberglass isn’t going to come back through the poly. Only time you are going to see that is the repair mapping if done incorectly especially with the wrong products.
