Some of you may remember that I did something a bit stupid 9 months or so ago and ended up losing my job over it  and I’ve been doing SMART repair ever since.

Well the other day I had a phone call from the old boss asking me to come down for “a chat”.

It seems that since I left things have gotten even busier, and despite throwing more and more staff at it they simply can’t keep up with demand so they are moving to a shift system to increase production. They haven’t really got room for the staff they have now (50% more than when I was running it) so the only way to get more work out is to increase the hours the shop is being used. Hence my boss calling me as he wanted someone that could hit the ground running, knew how the systems worked, and could be trusted to work unsupervised.

We’d talked about temporary shifts many times while I was there in the past but I’d always managed to work us out of it. This time is different though and one of the other branches has already made the switch, and I’m assured it will be a permanent job, rather than just a short term quick fix as was my fear when I first talked to him.

For now I’ll be working a 12 hour night shift 4 times a week along with one of the guys from the day shift. That will give the day guys more room to breath and so hopefully be a bit more efficient, plus we’ll be able to crack on through the night keeping the jobs rolling. If it works out well there’s the option to add another guy or two to the night shift, increasing capacity even more.

So it isn’t exactly perfect as I’ll be working nights, but at least it’s only Monday night to Thursday night / Friday morning, so I’ll get most of the weekend with my family.

Looking forward to being back behind a full size gun again. Oh, and working inside away from the elements!!!

Congrats mate,im new on here but i did read your post about when you lost ya job,i empathised with you as sometimes its hard to work in a shop where you have to do things the way the gaffer wants them done and do things you wouldnt want to do but hey ho you just have bite your tongue and get on with it.
Sounds like a very busy shop who do you work for ? Will you be painting all the time or shop foreman type thing ?

    Thanks mate.

I’ll be working for a company called The Car People, what many would class as a car supermarket. It was always busy when I was there with our record sales being over 170 cars per week. I think they’re hovering around the 100 per week mark at the minute, but still plenty.

Their quality standards are very high so all cars are checked over on arrival and any minor damage rectified in the paintshop before they go on sale. There’s no crash repair work going on just lots of things like scuffs & scrapes, scratches and dents on panels, stone chipped front ends, that kind of thing.

As to what role I’ll be playing depends on who’s working the shift with me. Some of the guys can paint but most can’t, so I’ll have to wait and see.

Glad to hear the news. Guess your old boss couldn’t have been too mad at you to ask you back.

You know your going to miss doing smart repairs in a parking lot , in the middle of a snowstorm. Congrats Andy, I have always been amazed at the sheer production you are able to put out.

Good news, Andy. Nothing wrong with a SMART repair, but doing it out in the weather has hairs on it.

I quite often do my painting at night. It’s far more efficient – no phones, no customers. Just get on with it.

Good stuff buddy, Im happy for you! :cheers

Thanks again for the good wishes.

I still think I’m a little crazy going back after what they did to me last time. I know I was in no way blameless, but I think they were very harsh on me. It all seems to have been forgotten though but I’ll definitely watch my temper very closely in the future!

Its the other way round with our shop,my gaffers are sound as fcuk and i can have a joke with them and tell them to sod off and more ! But the flip side of things is its very busy and small, also not the cleanest of places but the moneys good so cant have it all eh ?

    July 25, 2013 at 10:54 pm #43800

I was always pretty sound with my immediate gaffer (the one that has fought his superiors to have me back) but I was carrying a lot of stress from family stuff at the time which boiled over at work and I overstepped the mark. I think he would have let it go with a serious slap on the wrists but the guys above gave him no choice.

I remember once going on holiday and he sent me a text at the airport: “missing you already…” 😆

Being busy is what I’m looking forward to Carl. Where I’ve been working there simply aren’t enough jobs to keep me going and earning enough. It’s one thing saying I need to paint 5 jobs a day (for example) to get my bonus target, but if they’ve only got 3 or 4 cars that need painting what’s a guy to do? :headsmack:
