Hi Guys,
I’ve got myself a little problem. I was pretty sure the gun review page was not the right place to post this question, so here goes. I’ve got an odd collection of paint guns from a SATA copy (I think). It actually works ok, but with a 1.4 fluid tip – it’s got to be dialed back a lot to work correctly. Before I upgraded my compressor set up to a 5 hp dual stage with a 60 gal tank, I bought this gun, and Asturo Eco SX. It’s a HVLP gun that doesn’t require much air. It’s OK, but I’ve had issues with it as the fan is pretty small and for an complete paint, I’m a little worried about how it will turn out.

I’ve never shot a B/C before and know that I may need a base gun with a moderate fluid cap and a clear gun with less.
I shot my test panel and even though I wasn’t paying attention much, it came out OK (it’s a single stage just to check the colour). I did get one stripe due to the pearl not laying nice (shot with the “SATA” copy at 30 psi at the gun regulator, 1.4 cap). I’ve been thinking about finding a better gun, it has to be forgiving and easy to use. Oh, and I’m shooting SW if that matters.
Here are the panels (the colour is Porsche Marine Blue). What gun would you suggest?

December 2, 2009 at 7:52 am #17386Ditto on the LPH400. I use the purple cap for base. It suits my style better than the orange. I will tell you though, its easy to get some mottling with that orange cap when spraying sherwin base coat. I have never used the orange cap with any other paint line so it may be a real winner with others.
every time i buy an expensive paint gun it turns out to be really crappy, the last one i bought was a devilbiss which sucked completely, and before that a Sharpe. Heres my guilty confession: i spray with ATD guns now. yea theyre cheap but i have no problem with them mottling paint or zebra stripes or whatever. the pattern isnt that small or large, i mostly do overall paint jobs. the only issue i have with them is the lids, which is easily avoided if u convert them to a pps system. Personally i think you can shoot the best looking paint with the cheapest gun if your technique is right and the air supply is plenty.
Before I bought the orange cap, I did some research on purple vs orange cap, and from what I understood, purple cap was slow, “dusted” the paint and it was better off for candy (??).
Hub @ AsetUSA recommended me the orange cap.
I sprayed BMW silver with it (first time spraying silver) and it turned out great, except a few mottling around the curves which I think was my fault for spraying too close.Basecoat does not need to be atomized well as clear, so any inexpensive decent gun can do a nice job.
But clearcoat is a whole different story, it needs to be atomized and its really easier to spray clear with decent guns. I have an Astro EVO1.4, clearing with this gun was slow and you really had to watch out for your spray methods.
When I sprayed first time with Iwata or Sata, so much easier.December 2, 2009 at 4:03 pm #17391MoCoke wrote:

I’m not a huge Devilbiss fan but a lot of people love them and get great results. Do you use high flow fittings? Sometimes the best gun won’t spray well if it can’t get the air supply it needs. Just a thought!

I am real surprised too I love my Devilbiss guns I did have a Problem with the Plus gun I had to return it but the new one is awesome! I have the FLG3 for Primers a GTI for Base and the Plus for clears they all work great, And with all the added tip size choices there really hard to beat I have 2 or 3 diffrent tips for each of the gun’s its like having 8 diffrent guns.
December 3, 2009 at 5:26 am #17415Thanks guys, so I’m looking for an Iwata or a DeVilbiss GTI…let the looking begin.

I use it for every thing, solid colors, metalics and pearls.
December 3, 2009 at 9:35 am #17422Where does everyone suggest I pick one up on-line? Suggested/preferred retailers?
If you want to go with Devilbiss, get the GFG-670 Plus gun.
Its a compliant gun, way better for spraying clear!I’d suggest http://www.autobodystore.com
December 3, 2009 at 9:18 pm #17429What’s the difference between the LPH 400 and the
LPH 400 LVX EXTREME. All I see is the orange cap?December 4, 2009 at 8:32 pm #17481I’m bidding on one right now (everyone stay away from e-bay for a day or so :rofl ) Depending on which one I end up with I’m either going to need a silver or an orange cap. What price can you do for them?
Yeah.
I’ve never been big on the Whole buy the cap only scam.
Just to buy the cap you’re looking at half the cost of the gun which is ridiculous in my opinion.Last time I looked at the cap. they were like $87 for most the colors.
Which is a hard price to beat.
But damn, I still think for just a cap that is crazy. :wak - AuthorPosts
