I just posted on your wall… I am being switched over to onyx this week and have two reps with me that I can ask tomorrow. I recall them saying something about mixed paint that has sat past its potlife would produce a seedy look….I’ll run it by them tomorrow for you and let ya know what they say.
cool. i think we were given bad info from the start. they said to shake it but i think its to aggressive. they said use a sata hvlp 1.5 but it sprays better with a rp 1.3 or an iwata 1.3. they said 2 flashed coats and then an orientation coat but it sits flatter if you orientate while wet.
AnonymousApril 14, 2010 at 3:37 pm #20673Hey Zarbat , so far Onyx has been pretty good….it’s pretty straight forward, easy to use, dry’s fine for us so far (even without the blowers on). Haven’t had to sand it yet but i’ll keep ya posted. I’ll post up a better review of it in the articles section when I get some time. We pretty well just flipped a coin for onyx, I didn’t care either way which one we got. Our jobber suggested it would be easier for inventory trading purposes to stay with RM, we were fine with that.
Harry, we are shooting it with a 1.3 (devilbiss CVI). They have told me a bigger tip size would be optimal but no problems with the 1.3 yet. I have sprayed 90 line with my Iwata lph400 with a 1.3 and it worked quite well but apparently the recommendations are different between lines. They set up our reduction on smart track to 70 rather then 60….both of them disagreed with the tech sheet recommendations of 60% reduction. I’ll ask more about what would cause a seedy look…so it’s exclusive to mixes that have hb203 in it, is that right?
We paint 8-12 cars a day and really thought it was a garbage system. With diamont we had no issues, could paint 12 cars all day long. We actually lost productivity switching. Had color match issues, drys slowly, stays soft for weeks, and really looks like crap after 6 months on bumpers and hood edges. We had none of these issues with Diamont. Switched to Sikkens autowave and those problems went away. Dont have to worry about tearing the base with a tack rage even after a 15min flash. We based the inside of a hood with onyx, as an experiment and it was still soft 2 weeks later. We switch to onyx as well as another shop about 15 miles away at the same time,we have both switched since. That was about year and half ago. Been with Sikkens for 9 months now. Good luck, but their tech book is missing a ton of info. Make sure to stir your base before adding reducer. And dont hammer on your first coat, the book is wrong on application.
AnonymousApril 14, 2010 at 8:43 pm #20675My rep here said the hb203 black toner is like roof tar and sounds like it could make sense for you to have a problem with the toner. He say’s he’s happy to discuss it with you but would like some more information, He’s the Toronto BASF rep – Kirk Edwards 416-527-2732.
Also I have been advised many times to stay away from the hardener as it seems to cause more problems then it helps, specifically drying problems. Were your problems with or without using the hardener joe?
Both ways, at first they didnt know what do with under hood colors.. They said no hardner and no flat clear, well it washed off or started to peel. Then it was use hardner, still the same results. So we went back to using flat clear. Tech book said nothing, and BASF didnt really know. We never made one claim with Diamont, but I think they ended up owing us 10k before it was over in replacement hoods that peeled on the inside.
Well I think I know one thing …. my Diamont system is going no where :whistle:I’ll be keepin mine, cause this is all a pile of hog wash.
Put the water out for show and mix paint out of the back room. :pcorn:
my jobber tells me they aren’t allowed to sell it past july….but we can use it as long as we can get it…if you can still get it. I should sell ya my old diamont system. Just bought a new BC175 before the change, i’m sure you know the price on that! :exci :exci
AnonymousApril 15, 2010 at 4:05 am #20688ya, you could be right stone. I`d be interested in knowing if guys up here might still be able to order from the U.S in non-mandated area`s to get there high-voc fix. BTW I posted an initial review on Onxy here. If I come across any problems worth noting I`ll make a post about it, but so far so good.
