I’ve got a customer who wants the true med. red look of candy apple red, but balks at the price I quote him for a true three stage paint job. He keeps coming back to me with factory 3 stage colors not understanding the extra work involve in shooting the tint coat.
I’d thought that I would throw it out to the forum to see if anybody knows of a b/c that gives you 80% of the look of a true candy. mostly staying in the middle of the color range without being too pink or too maroon?
Has anyone tried this stuff?

Thanks in advance

December 13, 2008 at 2:30 am #12075a lot of companies will have a 2stage formula for a three stage paint. you could also look into House of Kolors KBC candy base coats. they simulate the look of candy but in a base clear system. however you won’t get as much depth with a bc/cc as a true candy
December 15, 2008 at 4:57 pm #12092Is your customer wanting custom candy paint or just a good looking red?I like the standard red that was on Chevy trucks in the early 90s.If hes wanting candy paint probably have to be House of Color or he me want to try to look at Plantet colors trough Napa.
December 15, 2008 at 8:39 pm #12094GM 9088 looks like a candy but isn’t sort of a cherry red maybe a couple of shades darker but you can always tint it lighter.
December 15, 2008 at 9:41 pm #12095Yea that was what I was thinking.Do it that way and dont get into the extra expense of three stage paint.
December 16, 2008 at 7:27 pm #12107From everything I’ve gathered from him he “desires” a candy job, but has put a strict limit on the price. He’s already stated his wife won’t let him spend any more than what I quoted him for a BC/CC. It’s a very clean car, basically sand & shoot. I gave him a quote to repaint bc/cc, and for a 3 stage, but he only heard in his head the bc/cc price. Most of the bc/cc red pearls I’ve shown him he’s discounted as being “Too dark”.
The biggest problem is. He’s not real definitive in what he wants. He brings in pictures of cars printed off online forums, but no codes. Sometimes they are the same picture on two differnet pages, and they look completely different. He brings in dealer brocures with tri-coat colors, but doesn’t quite understand that it’ll be more for those colors. Sometimes he picks out copper colors and says they look nice.
I’m going to cover my behind and do a few sprayouts of some colors including B/c, 3 stage and candies with the prices right on the card. When he decides, I’ll make him sign and date it in permenant marker.
One things for sure, I’m not going to buy my work.
December 17, 2008 at 12:46 am #12108Good idea nothing worse than a wishy washy customer i have the same problem with a 55 chevy we are doing they want it Glacier blue so i show them a 1955 chip of glacier blue and thats not the right one lol. any way long story short had them go through all the chips pick what they like do a panel then sign it off.I try to get them to commit to a color as soon as possible so it doesn’t hold up progress.
December 17, 2008 at 6:39 pm #12113I would probably tell him to put a cap on the amount of money his wife can spend on make-up and hair color, and then use the additional funds to get what he really wants, which is the true candy paint. And, one thing I learned along time ago, NEVER give a customer a color chip book,LOL!
December 17, 2008 at 7:16 pm #12114:laugh: you know that would never happen. as for the chips its thier car and they can have any color no matter how bad it looks on thier car.we did a 59 impala cnv. and they picked the worst dingest blue i have ever seen and even the stainless couldn’t make this thing pop. gives me the heebie jeebies everytime i see it.but the owner is happy as a clam.
on the subject of candy colours what do you guys thin the candy with is it a regular thinner or special additive
what brand candy. House of Kolor urethane candys are reduced with urethane reducer and they also have a hardener. if its a basecoat candy then just the same reducer as the base.December 18, 2008 at 4:37 pm #12126nick@dunsdale wrote:
cheers dingit is uk based candy paint so you may not have come across it, found quite a good candy thread over at A.B. online
I saw that. Just think of the candy as a single stage metallic. if you put it on too wet it will move on you. to get the color you are looking for your likely gonna have to do 5 coats. dont be afraid to go light with 75% overlap on the first 3 coats. you can always put more on to darken it up but those first coats are critical in getting an even surface.
