Help/Advice painting Gold Metal Flake

Hi Guys
Ive got to paint a show car for a show in Dubai and have 2 weeks to create a master piece, my client wants it as close to the colour of a gold ring but with a sparkly pop as the Arabs will love this [apparently].
Ive never painted metal flake before and although i get the principle of it, I was really after some advice or tips on how some of you guys go about it, cost isnt an issue but time is…

Hey mate, it depends on what grade of metal flake you want to use, ; ie using an ultra fine metal flake is like a coarse metallic and will go through a normal set up on a 1.3/1.4, also it would be best to get a house of color flake or a brand name as if you get a lets say a eBay flake you will fined when mixed in with the clear the fake flake are died and the color comes off. I’ve used flake before and I’ve found that you need a great back colour : ie for gold flake use a black base it will bring out the gold more 🙂 depending on the style of car and colour will depend on how much flake In . Well in my eyes you wouldn’t have a classic car with flake all over it. Maybe only on the roof as if was a trend or modification they did 🙂
I would go to House of Kolor.. or ALSA corp. They have some trick colors, in fact HOK is all one of the TV build shows use. ALSA corp has some sorry sevice reps. I tried to buy a glow in the dark paint, they said “all the sales people were at lunch” and wanted me to call back later. WTF You wont go wrong with these products. HOK offers the compliant Shimrin 2 line which is compatible with their old line. Some of which have been discontinued. Metajuls are faceted and have more sparkle than flakes, which are flat. I’ve sprayed them both. Metajuls are nice. HOK Kosmic Krome is another option. Mirror Reflective was discontinued unless they have since reformulated it. There are countless combinations available in the new line and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface. HOK does not have the market cornered on flakes, others have been around for years.

My instructions from the Client is to create a finish based around a Gold colour with as much “POP” as possibe, now this is on a £300k car so needs to be classy aswel.
I have opted for a Holographic Gold Flake [Medium] from Custom Paints here in the UK, they have sent me a sample and infact im here at work right now playing around wuth some test panels, one with a gold base, one with a black base and one white.
Ive mixed the flakes 50g per ltr of clear, put 3 coats of that on, and for the test ive applied 3 coats of normal clear to, on the car i shall probably flat the clear with flake in it, before applying 2-3 coats of clear, soon as I get a sec this afternoon i shall post some pics of my test panels.
The car is a Soliel Anadi [Google it] which shall be in production soon, it was at the Monaco Top Marques show in April [another one painted by me in tri pearl white]

Hi Scott, yeh that sounds like the one although I bought the sample bottles direct, we are shelving the Holographic flake now, as the rainbow effect isnt suited, although it looks as though we will be going for a Gold flake over a Black base, is HOK any better than any of the other flake suppliers, I should imagine there all pretty much similar arent they?
has anyone ever used or know anything about an agitator pot to keep metalflake agitated whilst mixed with clear coat, I heard Sata do one but cant seem to find it..the Gun I use for Clear is a Sata 4000RP.

Where are those samples you shot? I’ve only used HOK flakes, some of their other products and PPG Vibrance. You said you wanted the look of gold ring which is smooth. Flakes will look more like gold dust or shavings. There are others who have many more years experience than I, and have done hundreds of jobs and variations in paint combinations.
