Ok – what’s a letdown panel? (a few minutes later…google to the rescue) – so it’s a spray card. Got the idea. I’ll get the extra as having it is less risk than not having the extra paint.

Getting after it today. I picked up some UTech sealer and another couple of pints of paint. I wish I could take a vid to get more tips on technique. Off to set up the garage for paint.

Sh!t…just got in from laying the sealer and I’ve got some contamination (silicon? Wax?). I washed all the parts and wet sanded them with soap then degreased and used windex. Then I let them dry for an hour before the sealer…and I still have issues. I even degreased everything before I started sanding. If I paint in a wind storm in the back lane, I have no problems…if I’m really careful, I get issues.

I guess I’ve got more sanding to do. Any tips?

Of course there also has to be some contamination on the damn tank! I have a new apprciation for those that paint motorcycles.

what a beautiful gun! as far for the contamination make sure you only clean your surface with wax % grease remover before you start painting, apply it and with another rag wipe it off. A tack rag is also necessary, if you have some around, tack it before you shoot it! and make sure to tack it between coats, you would be surprised how much little garbage is on your surface! :rock

You need to pickup some real wax and grease remover as well as water based cleaner. That will solve most of your problems..

I’ve got Pro Form W&G…what’s the real stuff. I do tack between coats and will invest in real waterbased cleaner. I just shot the base – went well for round one anyway. Gotta let it flash and get back out there.

The Pro Form is actually not too bad, I have used it on a lot of my personal jobs (yes better products are available and do a better job). However, you should be using a final wipe cleaner instead of wax and grease remover at this point.

The fish eye(s) might be from something else (gun, air line, paint mixing containers, something in the environment, rags/towels etc).

Usually when they are from the surface not being clean you tend to get a cluster of them. Let the sealer dry, then sand it well and reapply. Looks like you are doing a good job otherwise

On a side note, it looks like you’re a frequent visitor to Princess Auto :clappy

Yes, I’m strong with the Princess. I sanded them out and shot the base. Turned out great. I just put on the first coat of pearl – it’s freaking amazing. I also owe you guys big time on the paint volume call. I had to dip into the second pint of base – boy am I glad I had that. OK – time to get back in there and shoot the next coat.

    Thanks Ben,

Things have smoothed out a little. Three coats of pearl and I’ve got this. Just waiting on flash time for clear. I’m going to let it sit for a while – that’s a lot of paint.
