Ok you guys here is the scoop, any company that gets bought out and moved to china the quality goes right in the toilet (peterson vice grips come to mind, not anywhere near what they used to be)For people who have never used a sata, try one the quality will speak for itself. If you are a hobbiest get a tekna or prolite,it will last you for many trouble free years. If you paint 3 cars an up everyday get a sata,I have run my satas hard and have a couple that are close to 15 years old and they spray like brand new.You pay a price for a good tool that works every time you pick it up and consistency/reliability is worth it to me.Iwatas are a great spraying gun but are nowhere near as tough as a sata.I can guarantee the chinese gun will crap out in a matter of time, there is no chinese product made to last the test of time.
A good spray gun does not make the painter but it will help eliminate variables and improve consistency. Now if I use a finishline to clear a hood I can get a great finish but I would have had to work harder to get the desired result instead of doing it the easy way and using my RP.
My main concern is how well will the gun hold up over time. I know when I pick up my SATA it’s going to work 99% of the time. When I pick up my Finex most of the time it doesn’t. I tried an Iwata a few months ago and it sprayed excellent. My problem is that it looked a lot like my Sharpe inside. Years back I did use a Star gun that looked like a SATA jet90 and it sprayed just as well. I wouldn’t mind trying one of them again.
Can you remember what model star gun it was? Just out of curiosity :cheer:
That is why I went with a known brand..
Regarding the Sata, Iwata, Devilbiss.. ahh love at first sight for me
Painted with 4000 RP, 3000 RP.. beauty..I do mostly bikes as a side business and a help for my friends and acquaintances.. I used to use cheap tools since I was not in a high production but it bit my a$$ many times.
As an analogue.. I am a programmer I do mostly large software.. The point is that the software needs to be reliable every time in the action you expect it to do.. It needs to work flawlessly.. here is where the money comes from.. Its the same with pro tools..
And yeah after thinking like that.. I understand why paint guns are expensive..

One of the reasons I have a heap of Star guns. They just work. Every time.

I agree absolutely with you on this, especially on the newer supernova guns.
Whilst I love the way mine sprays, the control knob covers have all fallen off, the chrome is flaking off of the air cap, and there is some major pitting of the screw threads inside the gun. Yes I know it’s had a hell of a lot of use but even though it’s been well looked after it still looks like it’s 100 years old, not less than 4! By comparison the Sata NR2000 I have was well used as a demo gun before I bought it, and has shot plenty of paint while I’ve had it, but it still looks pretty much brand new and works flawlessly.
I may end up treating myself to a 4000RP some time soon. Not because it’ll do the job any better than what I have (having demo’d one) but because it’ll look a whole lot better in my hand and will probably outlive me!
