My friend bought an undertail for his 600rr and was nice(crazy) enough to let me shoot it :wak .

This is my second time ever painting with a gun and most of my experience is with a buffer so he really has some trust that I’ll make it look good.

Factory urethane metallic silver and 2 coats of clear:

As you can see, I got some runs from laying the second coat a little heavy. At least they are in a good spot for easy fixin’.

Once it’s fully cured I’ll sand&buff then update.

it maybe just me but it looks like the basecoat was put on either a bit to dry or not reduced enough as it looks like it has a texture to it. maybe it was not atomized enough, but you will get better and a paint job aint complete unless theres a run in it lol

no one ever says you have to leave the run in it tho.

Great job and keep it up.

The paint called for a 1:1 mix ratio. I thought it looked a bit thick but I don’t have the experience to know for sure so I just stuck to what the bottle called for.

About what consistency should I aim for?

what brand of paint are you using my PPG DBC calls for a 1:1 also I would say its close to the same as water when reduced so its fairly thin also you could try to turn up the air pressure on the gun

whats your gun setup? size nozzle?

Sorta Looks more to me like it’s a very mild case of Mottling. (Putting it on too wet, allowing small amounts of Metallic to float together.)
Maybe a combination of too light on a early coat, too wet on the last coat.

There’s a very fine line between too light, and too wet, but you’ll get a hang of it.

Remember it’s not clear coat, you’re not trying to achieve any sort of gloss when shooting Base.

Either way I think he did a good job. I’ve seen pro’s do worse. (I won’t name names, but you know who you are!)
“Should” be able to cut and buff that right out without an issue.

yes I know Im a bad painter and im ok with it lol

I think you did a great job and will only get better

Trust me, we’ve all had our share of disasters.
There’s no such thing as a perfect paint job.

I’m not sure what paint it was, my friend took it with him. I do know it was ridiculously expensive, something like $100 a half pint…something about only one company has the rights to make/sell it, I don’t know.

The gun I’m using the the Central Pneumatic 66222 from Harbor freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/high-volume-low-pressure-gravity-feed-spray-gun-66222.html

It was very frustrating trying to get it to lay the base like you guys are saying (I know what it should look like). I tried turning up the air pressure and adjusting the gun every which-way but I’m thinking it was the mixture. 1:1 just wasn’t enough. IIRC it’s a 1,2 nozzle. I would like to pick up some other sizes but am not sure what to get. it’s been a while since I’ve had the time to look into stuff.

Also I think you’re right ratstang, the first base coat was pretty light, then the second I layed it on pretty heavy in order to ensure coverage since it was spraying blotchy. Either way, I’ve made much worse paint jobs look great with some paper and my buffer, this one will be easy compared to others.

Thanks for the insight and compliments guys, it’s greatly appreciated.

Hmm….. sounds like Colorite they are crazy expensive. The same paint from PPG is half that of what Colorite wants for it.

ask your friend what the paint color was and I will see what it cost from PPG

June 21, 2011 at 3:09 am #31367

yup color-rite. very expensive, matches usually suck and the paint is soft and gummy like an old acrylic enamel. i hate that stuff.

June 21, 2011 at 8:28 pm #31376

Crap. Well I really hope it matches up well for him. I know he spent the extra $ to ensure a proper match…would be very upsetting if it was for nothing.

June 21, 2011 at 8:46 pm #31377

well heck I didnt know I just had to spend a few more bucks for the color to match…….DOH!

well that is a myth, No such option.

Thats why we blend most of the time, we can get close but for dead nut exact match its never going to happen.

and that piece goes under the tail above the rear tire Right? one trip down the road you will never know the dif

yeah i dont really sweat it on an undertail. these aftermarket companies that make these things only get them so close as well. once they are mounted you cant tell at all.

U did a good job for a second timer. Next time don’t try to go for coverage in 2 coats. Most times it takes 3-4 coats og color. U might also use a correct color sealer for faster coverage. Plus a 1.2 tip isn’t what u want get a 1.4 tip & possibly a better gun to spray with. That would cut down on some buffing time. But like others side you’ll get better if u stick with. Hell my first paint job, I ran the clear all over the whole truck. Look real good when it was raining.
