well how is all? im an apprentice panel beater with no job! so im doing work for my self at home im using devilbiss t1 and t2 guns. i use spies heker wb paint and sikkens autolear lv clear. basically i can get a good finish on bumpers an stuff if their off the car but say if i had to paint the side of a car i would get either a very dry finish or a load of runs in the clear. i have no trouble with the wb paint only trying to dry it! so if any one could tel me a good set up for the gun and technique for painting because i was never tought how to paint. i would be very gratefully because i am burned of flatting clear! sound
August 16, 2010 at 1:55 pm #23957What compressor do you have (size and horsepower)? How long is your air supply line? Sounds like you don’t have enough CFM (air flow).
Many yonks ago when I used to refinish parts at home, I had a similar problem. The compressor (2.5hp/40 litre) was ok for small parts, but didn’t have the balls to do a hood or door.
In my shop, my 10hp/340litre compressor doesn’t have that problem! 😉
With this compressor, I am running Devilbiss GTI Pro’s. On the clear gun with a 1.3mm and T2 tip, I am running 29-32psi into the gun, 5.5 turns out on the fluid and a quarter turn in on the fan. Spraying at approx. 5-6″ to the surface at a medium speed pass, overlapping each pass by 50%. I can control the finish (peel) by my speed and the reduction of the material.
I’ve been painting for 8 years now and still get a run every now and again. A 20 year+ experienced Porsche/Audi/Lexus painter said to me once that if a painter doesn’t get a run, he/she’s not trying hard enough!
Painting is all about practice. And it does take quite a while to get good.

I have a 3HP 200,l comp sometimes the pressure drops but rarely. yea that’s were i was going wrong i had the fluid tip wide open and the fan was open a good bit too. i wish i read your post earlier im after painting 2 doors and got very heavy looking orange peal and a run!! is it possible to get a very light finish like you would see on a lexus/ toyota with my gun and sikkens clear? i love that type of finish. way more than a fully flat finish! thanks again for the advice il try that set up next time. i don’t mind getting a run but its a kick in the balls getting orange peal with it!

You still may not have enough CFM. What size air line are you running and what PSI are you getting into the gun?
How much are you reducing the clear, and are you using the suitable hardener and reducer for the temperature?

You can also look on youtube for other ‘how to paint a car’ videos. Keep in mind that the guys who are working really fast over the panels are likely using Sata 3000 RP’s. You won’t be able to work that fast with a Devilbiss!
try this
turn the fan knob all the way out
paint control knob 2-3 turns out (if u get run too much, turn this knob in. vice versa)
set pressure at 2bar (get a pressure gauge if u r not sure)u dont have to paint the first coat real wet n shiny, just medium coat
always go 50% overlap
touch the masking paper n see if the clear is dried
once is dried, u can paint the 2nd coat wetthat’s wat i do
keep the gun 6in away from the panel
i cant describe how fast u should move ur gun
but u have to look as u go
at the right speed u will see the clear is little bit peeling
once u know that speed, u just try to maintain that speed
the clear will flatten out during its drying process, so dont have to paint it real flat or u will get runs…..i think your orange peels is from painting with low pressure n too much paint because dat’s wat heppened to me from my first few paintings…lol :dnc :dnc
