Need to paint a new wing and most of a door on a ’08 passat. it got a tip on the side, the wing needs to be replaced so will come in the standard black coat, i’ll prime that with grey primer, the door has some light damage near the wing so will need a small amount of repair and to be grey primed. so i need to paint the full wing and blend back into the door and clear both panels. i think the colour is shadow blue. how much mixed ready to spray solvent basecoat will i need? thanks

Alot of variables to take into account. What color, which brand of paint(some cover better than others), are you using sealer or valushade, what kind of gun and how big is the wing? pics would help.
October 15, 2012 at 12:41 am #38624Hey matey, it would help to now what solvent your using, ie RM solvent base is a 2/1 mix. For that kinda job I mix 400g mix so when thinned it gives me 600g mix which will cover the new wing which I paint the inside as well with two coats, normally three coats on the outside of the wing a through the door, and if I need to blend over the bonnet or corner blow in on the bumper. All with 600g depending on the colour coverage.
October 15, 2012 at 4:19 am #38627it will be this shape passat wagon in this colour:

at most, the front wing/fender and the drivers door will need complete paint. the wing will come like this:
so i’ll prime that in grey, the door has some deep scratches half way back so they will be sanded back flat and primed if necessary.
i’ll get pics up of the damage tomorrow. i don’t know what basecoat the shop sells until i get there. i’ve only ever used waterbase before.
October 15, 2012 at 1:12 pm #38635so if i needed to paint the full door and wing how much paint should i get to be safe? i have a litre of lechler speedy 2k thinners here at the house, will this be ok for the basecoat or will it be too fast? should i go for a normal speed thinner?
October 15, 2012 at 8:24 pm #38639As ding says, a pint (1/2 litre in our money 😆 ) will be plenty.
Be aware that shadow blue is best over a very dark substrate. Personally I always use a black primer, or throw on a quick coat of whatever black base I have lying around first. You should easily cover it with 1/2L though, over black I’d be buying half that, but then I’m miserly with the paint!!!
Don’t use the speedy thinner if you can help it. Use the slowest thinner you can for the temperature you’re spraying in. That fast thinner will do the job (00 740 at a guess?), but the base will lay down better and blend out easier with the next slowest one (00 741 I think).
October 18, 2012 at 7:30 pm #38682cheer’s just bought a load of stuff today, 2 as new devilbiss gti guns, one is digital, sand papers, static masking, white sealer, black sealer, loads of shit! so i’ll put on the black sealer as andy suggested
