You guys post a lot of great pics of your work. How often do you get the type of results that you post? What percentage of your work comes out looking like Nex’s bumper or Stones Mercedes?

no such thing as perfect, but there is such a thing as a lack of effort 😉

What do you mean by how often? Do you mean how often do they look like that when you put the last coat of clear on or when it leaves the shop? I think most of us here do a little cutting and buffing. I do on almost every job to get the job up to an acceptable standard.

and when something won’t pass (I have been referred to as ANAL) , the decision to redo it, is made quickly and easily.

    :pcorn: make it right

I do zero cutting and buffing but will nib and buff. I will nib dirt out or if I get a run or sag. I never have to sand for texture or peel issues. I am also doing collision work so a cut and buffed car isn’t what they want. I am not painting show cars or restorations. Everything I spray will look better than factory.

A good product helps alot also. The clear I use is very nice and lays down very well.

I should add that I paint quite a few cars. 12-20 a week, so I have a good amount of practice. 😉

We cut and buff on a needed basis. We never cut and buff on Domestic stuff, or Japanese. Most of the European cars get a cut and buff since they are pretty flat from the factory.I do have one full time detail guy so that takes the weight off the painters.

every single thing that goes out here is cut perfectly smooth and buffed although unlike most of the others here, that’s what my customers are paying for since all my stuff is custom bikes or restorations.

Cut/buff, it depends on the level of trash and the importance of the job.

    Pretty much exactly this.

The finish always comes out how I want it too, any flatter just wouldn’t match the rest of the car, but you can’t help the dust nibs!

And to answer the other side of your question – consistency is the key to production painting, so all my jobs look the same, whether it’s my 1st job of the week or my 50th.

    B) so i guess the answer is … when your an artist, as many here are, your never done, you abandon your work….. at just the right moment. :welc to the world of body work and painting B)

every day. i don’t cut and buff, i have other guys worry about that. plus, most cars form the factory have some peel to them. i’ve actually had a customer complain that the paint was too smooth and one ask if we could dull the new paint to match the rest of the faded car.
however consitancy is key. i try to get at least one screwed up car a week. damn i your perfect they expect all the time.

in my dusty old workshop i have to flat and polish every thing i paint its a pain but like most on here if i had a £20,000 booth it would just roll out!
the funny thing is i have never used a booth in my life lol, but being consistant is the key
