Hey guys,
My little brother gave me his slightly rusting stainless steel bicycle and wants me to throw some paint on it. I was probably gonna do a video on it but it dawned on me that I don’t think I’ve ever painted stainless steel or if you can. I haven’t really looked at it yet but i thought I’d pose the question, can I sand and just epoxy this or what?
April 7, 2012 at 6:51 pm #36656I know in the Akzo line there is only one product that specifies it goes over stainless. It’s the Autoprep pre-treatment wipes. The etchs and epoxy’s state all the other steels but not stainless. To be honest I am not sure why and if it makes a difference. Might want to check the BASF sheets to see if their products are the same or not.

Arent the wipes basically just soaked in 1k etch? The basf tech sheets dont specifically say anything about stainless either. But the etchs are good over zinc and galvanized, so stainless should be fine. Personally I would go with some DX1791 🙂April 7, 2012 at 7:07 pm #36661[quote=”ding” post=25933]

1) Depends who you know.
2)Nope, completely different technology. I’ve even used the wipes on chrome that was prepped with a red pad and it’s holding up very well in daily service on a fleet delivery van.
1791, might as well use EMCF………….blech
April 7, 2012 at 7:14 pm #366621. you might be able to get it. I could probably even get it. Doesnt help Jimmo out to much :p
2. Thats good to know. Would love to hear more about the Tech. I like that kinda stuff
1791 still has chromates. Heck Jay even says its like the old CR 🙂
April 7, 2012 at 7:18 pm #36663The chemists that made it are quite helpful, not sure how open they are to the public though.
April 7, 2012 at 7:31 pm #36664Pretreatment wipe. Is it similar to the old PPG DX metal cleaners/conditioners?
April 7, 2012 at 8:39 pm #36665Not really the DX579 was more like an acid/grain lifter that allowed the primer something to hold onto.
The wipes are more like a barrier coat.
April 7, 2012 at 9:41 pm #36667The pre-treatment wipes are based on allodine, although I think they are gay they do seem to work.We also have a jug of straight allodine that can be put in a pump and spray bottle on a large bare aluminum panel and then wiped off.
RED our shop will take all the CR you can get, like 2 pallets full :clappy :clappy :clappyJimmo its not ideal but proform has a low voc etch primer that actually works good, its 2k just like the old stuff.http://www.proformproducts.com/en/products/info/?product=289&category=8
April 8, 2012 at 1:18 am #36668getting it ‘cross da border could be a very large risk. 🙂

Let me stick my nose into this, back ib early 80s I put together a “sand rail” the tank was stainless steel it was park at the front of the house in the driveway ( live in Miami) the sun shined on the tank and into the living room, it bother my wife so to shut the B?&%$ I sanded it with 320, applied Awl Grip 2K primer ( it goes on real thick) you can sanded for ever and never cut thru it, then 2 coats of Awl Grip Corvette Yellow. 30 years latter is on my son’s back yard and the paint still shiny and only a couple of chips nickel size. I hope it helps specially for a guy that help so many so often. Sorry for the long story
April 8, 2012 at 3:16 am #36671Jimmo you can remove the rust with a solution of muriatic acid and water 1 to 1 it works very well on stainless on boats here in the ocean.
