I believe it’s been abandoned by all in favor of “How to use a Sharpe Razor without getting cut”

If it gets to 100 posts We’ll make it a sticky :pcorn:

Who here measures viscosity before they paint a car they want to be glass flat without buffing? I’m trying to find a #2 Zahn cup but they’re looking expensive for some reason.

On another note. This thread is a lot like the Arch of the Covenant. You see the title and how many replies it has and you think of all the great information that could be inside it. Once you open the Arch you get your brain melted like in Indiana Jones but if you are strong, and you persevere, you will find the post that makes it all worth while!

Negative, mix your clear according to your TDS sheet,if you add more reducer to compensate for temp you will have problems like solvent pop, dieback etc.It is all technique for an off the gun finish needing no cut and buff,no secrets. You also need the ability to adjust your technique on the fly when things go south to get the results you want.I run my guns wide open and compensate with distance and speed to get the desired result I want, time and experience will get you there.

I can safely say that in 17 years of painting I’ve never once used a viscosity cup for any kind of job. Sure I’ve sometimes stirred it up and looked at how well it runs off the stick, but that’s hardly scientific!

As Jason says, follow the tech sheet 🙂

yep same here don’t use the stupid cup I’m just like Andy, The stick method works for me. I also just follow the tech sheet less thinking on my part and I havent had any issues yet.

come one guys. Dont buck the advise that came from the paint school instructions.
check out these guys for all kinds of viscosity measuring equipment. and dont let pricing bother you. getting that glass finish off the gun will make you way more money than having to spend time sanding and buffing it all.

I’m actually hearing very good reviews on the nitrogen air compressors. A few shops around me have demoed them and are going to put them in

Oh ya less air comtaminates, Transfer is better I here also , And no having to worry about pressure changes in the tank due to shop temp either.

Did you buy one from them Ding? And would it be “No. 2 EZâ„¢ Dip Viscosity Cup with Conversion Chart” that I want?
I think measuring viscosity is a great idea especially for someone who works in many different environments in a part of the world with extreme hold and cold.

    January 29, 2012 at 4:32 am #35589

Not needed in hot and cold climates, that is why spraybooths are heated with an air makeup unit to keep a consistent temp.If you don’t have heat do not paint below 12-15C or 60-65F or your products will not cure.
