I AM ABOUT TO EITHER PUT BASF 90 LINE IN OR PPG ENVIROBASE. WHICH ONE? I NEED TO KNOW ALL THE PROS AND CONS OF EACH.
August 3, 2011 at 3:39 am #32036Basf is not a true waterborne, still solvent toners with a waterborne binder, also has to be mixed on a machine twice a day.Slow to dry, hard to repair, not user friendly.
Enviro base has good color match, true waterborne, only needs a couple of shakes before you pour, fast drying, easy to use, good metallic control.I would also put money on ppg being less expensive compared to basf.August 3, 2011 at 3:47 am #32037
Basf is not a true waterborne, still solvent toners with a waterborne binder, also has to be mixed on a machine twice a day.Slow to dry, hard to repair, not user friendly.

No Sikkens plug :pcorn:
That PPG base is almost the same as Sikkens, so out of the 2 choices its as close as you can get 😆
I’ve personally never used 90 line, but I have used envirobase. I would happily recommend PPG, it is a great system that is easy to use. My only complaint is that the EC 700/750 clears are a little finicky and will take some getting use to. But there are other clears available if they don’t suit your fancy.

Sikkens is a great line. Not sure about cost compared to PPG, I would think PPG may be slightly cheaper. PPG has a low VOC line of custom/special effects colours and uaually has formulas for many hard to find colours

with a mixing system you can make any color you want. dont buy paint based on the guy thats getting paid money to endorse it
plus fooses custom colors are mixed in onyx. not 90 line 😉August 3, 2011 at 6:30 am #32054
WHICH ONE HAS MORE SPECIAL COLORS, BASF HAS FOOSE AND WHAT DOES PPG HAVE?
ppg does have their vibrance system, is especially for custom effect color, and occasssionaly use in regular color. it is offered in thier solvent and wb lines as well.
i don’t know where your located, if your not in a low voc strick zone, they have some nice clears as well.:agree The Vibrance line has everything you need to make your Foose paint and they just came out with a waterborne Midcoat clear last month so it opens up a whole new chapter for custom colors in Envirobase
toners for Enviro run between 39.00 for some HL and up to 193.00 for 2L bottles special effect HL toners run 223.00.
I dont know what the BASF toners run , as as stated before the Envio just need a shake before you pour it no mixing bank
so far Enviro seems to be the way to go unless you got time and money to throw away and just want the Foose name next to your mixing bench
also Chips Painter on Overhaulin, Charley Hutton (Has His Own gig now Charley Hutton Color Studio) is a big Envirobase Guy. Check out his work he only uses PPG
so in the end +1 PPG
I dont know about BASF because i havent used it, but as far as ppg goes i use it everyday in my shop and have not yet had an issue with it. Great color matches, user friendly, actual variant sprayouts in the color decks with the system so you know which one to mix. Great system.
August 8, 2011 at 12:07 am #32162We got are sikkens paint system 9 months ago ..and I gotta say from.there primers to there clears ..its been pretty damn good to us.
October 19, 2011 at 5:53 am #33657CHADD THAT IS THE QUESTION WE ALL ASK. I HAVE 90 LINE IN MY SHOP NOW AND HAVING TROUBLE WITH IT. 90 LINE IS NOT FAST SO IF YOUR LOOKING AT FAST NOT 90 LINE. I DONT KNOW WITH PPG BUT THAT IS MY NEXT CHOICE WE ARE THINKING OF CHANGING TO PPG BUT IM STILL UN SURE. I AM TRYING TO WORK OUT THE PROBLEMS WITH 90 LINE BUT ITS NOT LOOKING GOOD ….
Hmmm hmmm its funny you say that sikkens and ppg are cheaper than 90 or even onyx for that matter they are almost identical… we have had two systems in my shop since I was an apprentice starting and we went through both ppg and sikkens and the cost job for job was more expensive because of material cost.
IMO from what I went through, you use less toners to get more coverage with 90 line….cleacoats on the other hand… :chair :chair
it would take twice as much paint to do the same work for ppg if i remember correctly so we went with 90 and sikkens.
The matches at the time without tinting wasn’t fun either for ppg
Dry times are longer but we have beautifully equiped booths with wonderful airflow and drying has never been an issue so I will leave that part in everyone elses hands.
my two cents
