What are you comparing 90 line to dbc and autobase plus,or enviro and autowave? You are the only guy I have heard say 90 line is the best choice.

I am by no means saying its the best choice im saying $$ wise its the same because it takes less (of the more expensive toners) for coverage. = the same or cheaper than autowave it would seem

but slower dry times and I personally do not like the clears right now.

Sikkens primers are very nice to use too compared to 90’s

enviro and autowave, we still have autowave the ppg reps came down and ran us in circles so we got rid of them.

    Does anyone else spray 90?

is there a way to improve WB toners shelf life?

Use them :p but really PPG toners are good for like 3 years, which if your not going through a toner in 3 years you really don’t need a mixing machine. I have a few on my shelf that are odd toners and they have been on past the shelf life and they are fine still.

I have found that so long as they don’t freeze and that they are sealed well, they will last quite a while. Most of the Sikkens toners have a shelf life of about 3 years too, IIRC…

What about onyx? I’m a mobile tech and run onyx system. What are advantages and disadvantages to onyx. What’s the shelf life and what about mixing? I haven’t had any issues with it so far :S Anyone else using? Color matches seem good and drys fairly quick. Its actually the only system ive ever sprayed so my two cents probably rant worth much! Just wondering why it wasn’t included in this thread?

That is a good question. i just switched my shop from spies solvent to water. Started with onyx. did not like it. we had a problem sanding the basecoat would gum up real bad. we now have 90 line in our shop. ????? but im still not sure about it. my paint company have been working with us to make this work my basf rep has been alot of help but look this is a business every paint has pro’s and con’s. I had ppg in at least 3 times pushing their product. I am looking at ppg but i have not seen anything different yet but today will be the test. i have my painter painting two hoods side by side one with 90 line one with ppg so do your home work. So we do a lot of dealers work and they want their cars in and out. i think with all this water paint that is not going to happen. i spend 100k on new booth and new shit for all this water and all i can say is wft:cens was i thinking. i’d go back to solvent if i could but i cant. so the only think i can say is chooose wisely. but if you want to push cars threw the shop fast. it will not happen with water even if you have a new booth that is set up for water. :chair

    What?

Try some other brands and use some blowers. Several of the water base coats can be very fast. I am currently using Autowave in a 25 year old down draft booth, with no modifications. Just a couple inexpensive blowers in there and it works very fast. PPG and DuPont were both fast to use as well. There are a lot of shops out there pushing massive volume with water…

    so true

Sure water isn’t as fast as solvent but theres not that much as a difference. I run a production shop and am doing quite fine with it. Try out some other types of drying methods or like ben said change your paint system

I agree Ben. In fact some of the water based I have sprayed covers faster and makes up for the time lost even without blowers. :teach

water is quicker on smaller jobs in my opinion.

And you cant argue it covers quicker and is much much less aggressive.

But it is not quicker on large jobs.

Lets take a job that is close to a complete. By the time you get round it in solvent your first panel will be practically dry,

This does not happen with water

And if you are using a high quality solvent like Spies for instance the covering power is very good

Solvent will dry with very little air movement, water wont ever tried painting water outside of a booth, easy task to do this with solvent not so easy with water.

Though i am biased as i grew up with solvent and find water to slow and use’s more energy to dry it,

Since switching my gas consumption has gone up. And i dont mean just the price as that has obviously increased over the years i mean the actual cubic meter consumption of gas has risen to cure this product
