I have shot my final primer on before color. I will be shooting silver. My question is when I do my final wet sand I was going to use 400 then 600 and I don’t want to go through the primer and expose the primer below. So do I just start with 600 or is it better to level 400 and then 600 to smooth?
    Thanks

It depends how many coats of primer you applied. If it were me i would flatten with 400 than a coat of a good 2K urathane sealer.

You could start with 600 and sand the vehicle that way.IMO the amount of work it takes to wetsand a complete with 600 with no burn throughs is not worth it.I would just wet sand it with 400 and seal the entire vehicle, this way you don’t have to worry about burn troughs and you will have a nice uniform color and improve adhesion.Todays 2k urethane sealers go on silky smooth with no texture so you won’t have to worry about OP.

Use a guide coat of some sort. I use a black spray can just lightly spattered on the surface. Then you can see what your cutting better. I paint over 600 grit primer using silver all the time. If the sanding is taking to long, 400 is faster but I agree with Jayson ,you need a sealer over that course a grit as 400. Don’t make the mistake I have… finding minor imperfections when sanding, then filling them with spot putty and sanding with 320-400 and not priming or sealing over the recently retouched areas. Then seeing them after paint! Bill ANOTHER reason to use sealer.

I have already sanded it with 400 now and I have found a few bad areas and will fix them today. I did use a guide coat also.
What color sealer would be best under silver? The primer I used was SPI regular 2K buff. It went on great and sanded easy. But I don’t think yellow or buff is the color to go with under silver.

    9 times out of 10 a #5 sealer/shade will go under silver. #5 is a medium grey.
