Paint runs that is! I hate it!It seems like their is a fine line between getting a really nice wet coat and getting runs! I just got done doing some really nice bodywork. I started to paint and I felt I was going to fast with the gun. I decided to slow down and started getting a really nice wet coat. Went back out to the garage and I have quite a few runs now! Sucks but since it’s my own personal truck I think I will just live with them. Really sucks that they are noticeable though as they are on my tailgate! I was spraying metallic with a HVLP gun and had iniatially had the psi at the gun where I thought it should be. I may have made the mistake of either increasing the air pressure or just moving the gun too slow. Jack

Clear needs a lil more psi any ways, but that didn’t cause the runs, u went to slow, hvlps r not the best guns to spray clear because u have to move slow with them. next time over reduce the clear some, so that way u will get a wet look while being able to move fast enough not to get runs.

Thanks! It was the base coat actually. Does metallic tend to look dryer when first applied? Because it seems like it looks pretty dry when it first is applied, then after a minute it looks as though it tends to look the way it should. I get nervous painting as I usually have so much time involved in my bodywork!I love painting and need experience but as you all know materials are expensive! Probably the best paint job I ever did was on a race car! lol I wasn’t nervous because it really didn’t matter how well it turned out! It almost looked professional! It was just a single stage acrylic enamel. Any advice is always appreciated as always!!!!!!! Thanks! Jack

if you had runs with your base coat it means your applying it too heavy or wet and not letting it flash between coats. base is meant to be applied in light coats to achieve coverage and color. as far as the clear running it could caused by stopping in the middle of a panel, and not observing proper overlap like 50% or 75%, flash times, or proper reduction

Thanks! I think I just moved the gun too slow! ie. too heavy a coat. I believe I once read that you should move the paint gun like a foot a sec.? That sound about right? Thanks again! Jack
