First off im new to this forum so im gna introduce myself. My name is Chad Tatum, im 30 years old and me and my dad just relocated our paint and body shop to town (south hill VA)and I am the full time lone painter.
Anyhow, weve grown to the point where now its time to get a mixing bank so we can match colors better. For the past 3 years ive used primarily PPGs OMNI and Martin Senour CROSSFIRE. These cheaper paints offer no alternates. The 7 years before that I used PPGs DBC line exclusively and was very happy with the alternate selection. BUT THAT STUFF IS HIGH!!!
Im learning that MATRIX is basically a clone of PPG and that they’ve came a long way in the past 30 years. TRANSTAR I haven’t heard a lot about but what little I can find says the alternate deck isn’t too complete and that it can spray dry but I believe that the users who said that possibly were undereducing.
SO, any input here will help me out ALOT. This is a big decision for me.
The reason ive narrowed it to these two are the distributors in my area. Well within 90 miles.

Thanks[/b][/b]October 9, 2013 at 4:57 am #44842I have sprayed some of the Matrix clears. I like them alot. I dont know if you have a keystone that you deal with but I know they were pushing us to put a Matrix mixing bank in for awhile. You might try to give them a call and see what they can do for you. Some of the other lines you might want to look at is the Lesonal line ( Sikkens lower line) I have sprayed quite a bit of it and like it alot. And the Debeer line, both will save you money over some of the higher priced lines without sacrificing much of anything.

Matrix as you stated was created off of PPG’S Deltron line. How did they pull that off? Well when PPG decided to cut pension and force loyal workers into early retirement the offer was made to several chemists who launched deltron and that was that. Overall not a bad system. Clears are absolute shit for uv protection and offer little chip resistance but as the saying goes you get what you pay for. I would recommend this system if your choice is Matrix or Transstar. The clears are the biggest let down although I have heard from one of their reps that they are making a clear similar to concept 2021 and will have better uv holdout
Thanks guys. I have a Valspar rep im talking to too. I don’t believe theres a sikkens distributor. As far as the clear goes ill probably stick with PPG shopline 620. The stuff looks good to me and ive never had a problem with it. 614Paintwork do you have any experience with the color match capabilities of matrix or how it compares to PPG?
October 10, 2013 at 7:16 am #44864Matrix AG40(autoglass) is far from shit and much better than any of the shopline/omni crap.I am not a matrix guy at all but have used plenty of this clear and it holds up well, has excellent gloss and chip resistance.
October 10, 2013 at 7:31 am #44868Last time I checked you got 5L of clear and 2.5L so 7.5L of sprayable product worked out to $30 a sprayable litre. Not sure about the shopline but Im sure it was a 4:1 kit which would = to less than 5L sprayable. For the money matrix ag40 is a better bargain, keep in mind you do get what you pay for with paint, honestly if its something you care about the cheap $100 clear kits will always kick you in the balls a few years down the road, they always look like ass eventually.
Whoa the AG40 kit is $315.40! I haven’t had any problems with the Shopline 620 YET! But ive been spraying the stuff for 10 years. Maybe they just assume its not supposed to last that long if a problem did arise and didn’t bring it back. I cant speak for other cheap clears though.
October 10, 2013 at 7:52 am #44870Wow where ever you priced it from they are stroking you,we pay under $200.If your cheap clear is working for you don’t change.
October 10, 2013 at 5:59 pm #44874AG40 used to run me about $230 for the kit. thats about $28 a sprayable qt. your shopline is running $20 sprayble qt. I know the shopline is thinner than the AG40 and you will use more product thus costing more overall for the job. I bet that price list you received was list prices. Certainly shop cost is going to be less.
Well ive got to say guys.. The transtar rep brought some paint by today for me to try. Stuff is THICK!! I over reduced it 1:1.5 and it literally covered in ONE COAT. I’m starting to see some serious dollar bill savings. And the toners are cheaper than matrix as well. The paint being in suspension so it won’t settle in the gun is a plus too and I think it will help a lot with mottling too. The alternates may not be quite as good as matrix but Transtar is coming out with a new deck in December which will put them ahead I believe. I’ve got to admit I’m leaning towards Transtar.
oh yea price comparison ppg dbc vs transtar no mix:
unreduced quart wa9260 $246 vs $93. JL $212 vs $101. Not to mention the reduced amount of material used.October 11, 2013 at 1:53 am #44877I have heard the guys around me that were using it are starting to have delamination issues. I would rather pay more for a good product that I know will work. If you bill properly, the cost of material shouldnt be an issue
