Ok so i have a iwata LPH-400 for base but im running a 1.3 ive been painting with it no problem. but im afraid when i start my new job as a helper / painter that the gun is going to be a little slow for production and was wondering if it would be smart to run a 1.4 and with the orange cap?

1.3 vs 1.4 isn’t going to make a big difference speed wise. Best to use whichever size suits the product you are using best.

I clear with a SATA 4000RP which is a bit slower than the older 3000. On a typical job I might be in the booth for maybe 30 seconds longer x 2 coats. Not enough to make any real difference in that respect.

I use a lph400 1.4 with all three tips for my base, occasionally I clear with it if it is small enough but for my clear it normally is my w400lv4, the lph400 is way to slow for me. The guy I work with does everything with his and wont change a thing. I have seen quite a few w400lv4’s on ebay for decent prices. But the older model Sata rp’s seem to be the weapon of choice for alot of the folks around here.

What basecoat? If it is a thinner viscosity solvent base like Lesonal SB, the 1.3 will be fine. The trick with that gun is run it close and quick. Don’t try to use it at 5 to 6 inches, it will be slow and use more paint. At 3 to 4 inches that gun has a very quick stroke and is a miser on basecoat. Of course you will need to back up on the last coat for metallic colors. It was great for solvent but I did not like that gun for water at all so I went back to a SATA. Tekna sprays water great also.
