I am with Jayson, I very rarely turn my fluid in at all. If it is too much I just move faster. With that said if you are turning the fluid in just a bit and like the results better keep doing it then.
My settings with a RP are the same as Jaysons. 4″ range around 80% overlap and move fast. I get a better finish by stacking nice thin wet coats on. If you get too far back and start going slow it usually gives the clear a thicker lumpy appearance or if too fast of a thinner is used it will look dry.
Thanks again folks, maybe thats the key then to move even quicker.mine is open wide at around 3.5 to 3.75 turns out so i only knocked it back about half a turn.i shall try it monday but really chuffed at the change in finish already, can only get better.
Do you full time sprayers spray 2 wet coats or 1.5 ? Or does it depend on job and type of clear used ?July 27, 2013 at 11:53 pm #43815
Do you full time sprayers spray 2 wet coats or 1.5 ? Or does it depend on job and type of clear used ?
Depends on the job and product really. And of course the painter.
For a quick bumper cover job with a HS or UHS clear a light dust (grip) coat followed immediately with a full wet one should do. For more normal jobs I prefer two coats. First one thinner and faster but put enough on to make sure it’s a closed coat, then I go wetter on the second.

Wow 2 inches from substrate for clear ! What settings do you use with the supernova for base mate and is it Solvent or water based.i will take all tips and try to improve my technique it also feels good when i can see results and know i can paint a little, lol.

Yea i only do 1.5 coats on small jobs like bumpers but larger jobs i was getting mixed results mate so put 2 wet oats so theres a bit more to play with for polishing, just thought that may be one of my problems piling too much on when not really needed if i can get better finish with less clear used.i appreciate all your tips and hints folks thanks.July 28, 2013 at 4:33 am #43818As far as bumpers go I usually go 2 medium wet coats, but for everything else I’m like Andy a close fast medium closed coat(no dryspots and a nice thin wet coat) then hammer on a second coat 😛

Wide open on everything. 20-25lb with trigger pulled(material coming out). I shoot around 4″ distance, and i use sikkens waterbase.
Hello all, I’m new to the site but not a noob looking to learn from the experts here.
We (students) have been getting great results with the Devilbiss GTI for base/clear coat. That gun takes lot less air than the Sata (between 20-23 psi) Different guns manufacturer have their own specifications and settings. Was at a Sata demo recently, pretty cool guns but pricey.
As for clearcoat, why only 2 coats? It seems lots do 3 coats or sometimes more for showcar quality finish.
Modern hs and uhs clearcoats dont need several coats really mate and i imagine show cars get more coats so they can be colour sanded and buffed so that the finish looks flatter, even then 3 good coats is plenty imo.
The old gti devilbiss is a great gun Mate i just have a bit of trouble with some metalics and probably need to work on my technique.I don’t know about the base coat your using so can’t really comment on that. I know it probably doesn’t matter now but my 3000 has just under 3 turns to be wide open and the ws 400 has around 6.5.
What max meyer clear are you using 0200? what you did with your sata try the same thing with your iwata, slightly under aired about 1.7 bar like you said previously but close and fast. I can get an amazing finish with my supernova and 0200. I find the iwata works well being a little closer than the sata. What set up do you have in your ws400? I have a 1.3 hd.
Do you use 8000 hardner? try slowing it down a bit maybe with some 6000 or even just using 6000 instead of 8, Ive mixed some 9080 (all from same manufacturer and compatable) with 8000 before now with excellent results. P.S I’m from the uk too.
Cheers
Thanks whitey, not sure which max mayer it is bud i shall have a look,i know it smells horrible lol.
Yea i thought the iwata has lots more turns out to be wide open on the fluid,i had to redo 3 panels couple of weeks back on a performance blue focus st after i used the supernova,i found it dried in loads and when polished it out it had left a few fish eyes behind so tried the sata again and was fine,i know its my technique and gun set up skills i need to work on,but with help from rn im getting it nailed slowly.ill try the ws 400 a bit closer and faster and let you know mate,it worked with the sata. :stonedAugust 2, 2013 at 12:09 pm #43875
.ill try the ws 400 a bit closer and faster and let you know mate,it worked with the sata. :stoned
It’s an Iwata man, close and fast is what they’re made for 😛
As one expert on these guns once said “you know you’re too close when the air cap hits the panel!”
For clear I find anything over 6″ away and you can forget it, unless you’re purposefully trying to match the heavy peel on some Fords or Mercs. 4″ is sweet for me.
I would of been good at matching the peel at your gaffe then andy, but id match it on every car, lol. :rofl Did a small job today on a new astra gtc and forgot to try the iwata  picked up the sata and got right in close and as it was black i could see it going on better,it was flat so i think it was my problem being too far out from panel.
Whiitey, yes mate its the newer supernova 1.3 hd evo.i think it stands for high delivery.is it any good for solvent base or do i need the specific BASE one ?

The only difference is the stamp on the side, the business end of the gun is exactly the same 🙂
I have read somewhere that there’s a new OBS (optimum base setup) fluid nozzle around, but again I hear that’s been designed with dupont water base in mind.
My own gun is the original 1.3, but the works gun is a 1.3HD and it is a good step up in output.
