Hello,
I’m a DIY kind of guy and my wife and her sisters like putting dings on their cars.
This weekend a friend of mine gave me his 10 year old unused Devilbiss Pro 4000 aircompressor.
I ran a 240 volt line to my garage, put oil in the pump, turned it on and the old sucker fired right up.I’m totally new to autobody paint and repair so I started surfing the web and that’s how I found this site.
I called up a local Sherwin Williams store to ask for pricing on paints to estimate costs and found out the paint I wanted is already illegal here in California, hence I have to search deatils on waterborne process.
Once I got enough knowledge I’m gonna try and practice in my garage.
Thanks,
July 8, 2010 at 6:46 am #22498I would deffinatly go with a base clear. As far as what brand to go with? Go with the brand that is easiest to get in your area and the best service. I have heard good things and bad about sherwins water. :wak I have never sprayed it, I just use the solvent line.

July 8, 2010 at 7:48 am #22506well if ya can make this crap work ya ever think what ya could do with real paint :teach
July 8, 2010 at 2:52 pm #22509ya dont have to go water. there are low voc solvent systems out there which are all legal in cali. probably be much better for a home guy without the equiptment.
I just called a PPG distributor and they offered me a cheaper state compliant paint/low VOC called “Omni Line” the guy said for $35/quart and PPG waterbase for $88/quart but there’s a big difference in quality, PPG being the better one.
I’m still deciding if I’m going to start this hobby with waterborne or try it with solvent based.
All I have right now is the compressor. Regulator, filter and water separator are not even installed yet. A HVLP gun can be used on either water or solvent based paint correct?
Cost/ease of application/quality wise, should I go for single stage or no?thanks for the input
