I’ll be spraying BMW 309 Arctic silver probably this weekend. With all the hype surrounding the orange cap and how great it is for shooting metallic/95% of basecoats, I had to get one 😆 .
So far it looks the the recommended pressure is 16 psi. Anyone else used this cap?
AnonymousMarch 10, 2009 at 6:47 am #13238I’m curious myself, been wanting to spray old orangy their for a while.
March 11, 2009 at 2:54 pm #13251Im going with Hype brotha.. I bought one of the purple caps when they first came out.. HYPE.. Used it on one vehicle, and its been in its nice littel box ever since.. I spray with an Iwata LPH for base and clear.. Silver cap that comes with them is just fine for everything in my opinion.. Just my opinion though
BondoKing, many who have both the purple and orange cap seem to agree that orange cap sprays faster and its wayyy better for most basecoats than purple cap.
The purple cap just spray at low pressure and dusts in the basecoat, very slow and its only recommended to be used tor pearls and tough mettlaics. Hub @asetusa recommend this cap over purple and after doing some search around, people seem to be satisfied with the performance of the orange cap.
I’ll find out when I spray with it.
March 15, 2009 at 7:47 pm #13367I would go with the silver or purple. The orange seems a little heavier in the middle and I wouldn’t want that for a candy.
Everytime I have sprayed a candy it was always the kind that was like a tinted clear and got catalyzed. I have never used the candy basecoat.
March 15, 2009 at 9:24 pm #13368I would spray a candy thru the silver cap for sure.. I would leave the specialty caps for bases alone and not a candy.. In my personal opinion, all these caps are just money makers boys.. There is no reason to use another cap other than the silver one that comes with the gun..
Look at it like this.. If you drop $400 on a gun and it wont spray metallics etc well, you just wasted your money.. Its just a money thing in my opinion..
Just my 2 quarts worth
March 15, 2009 at 10:02 pm #13369I agree and disagree with you BK. I think the silver cap sprays metallics fine. You have to look at the collision side of it though. I never do all overs, everything is repair or replace then a blend. With so many variables when it comes to color variances I am never blending a panel paintable match. It is easier to blend a metallic when you have a little coarser spray. With the silver cap once you get your pressure down far enough to have a coarse spray your pattern is uneven. That leads to mottling.
See where I’m going with this? If I had an all over to paint I would use the silver cap, as it does the best job of laying the base flat, just not blending.
With waterborne the silver does a poor job with color match, you almost have to have the orange.
BTW, this is my personal experience only, I know of people that do fine with the silver on everything. I can’t. It may be my style of spraying or that I’m colorblind and can’t pick the right variances
I’ve been on the fence getting this cap myself. I use my LPH for solid colors and clear only (rarely used). Most collision repair
jobs — which is what i do — are metallics. And 90% of the time i reach for my NR2000. It’s old, beat up and i don’t get
a nice wide pattern anymore (gonna clean it real good soon), but it STILL does an excellent job. So, now, i’m thinking
of getting the 3000 and turn the LPH into a W400 (folks say it’s faster). And i haven’t touched my RP for a long time…Ryan, you’re spraying style is different from what i’ve seen. But you obviously can lay it down nicely with super tight overlaps!
You’ve found a “sweet spot” for your gun, materials and conditions. I’m still working on mine after all these years…Used the orange cap to spray a bumper today. (well, half of it  ).
At first past, the silver sprayed great, except some areas that was like 3-4 inch lines with uneven mettalic  (what is this called?)
but the rest looked great. So I waited for 15 mins, sanded those lines and turned in the fluid nozzle a bit, and sprayed again.
Wow! The silver seemed to spray nice, no mottling or tiger stripes. You can also spray a bit faster with it.
This is the first time I spray silver! (BMW 309 arctic silver).
Last time I sprayed a mettalic was a GM blue, I used the silver cap and I could see the tiger stripes, So I had to spray in different positions/directions to get rid of them.Recommended!
I’ll post pics later.
PS: R-M Diamont is a great base. Covers in 2-3 coats and costs the same as Dupont chromabase (at least here). Wish I used this base earlier.
March 16, 2009 at 2:14 am #13376Han, I am not for sure if anyone ever reaches what your looking for. There are times when I walk in the booth and nothing seems to spray right. To many variables!
I sold my NR2000 because the pattern sort of collapsed a little and stopped spraying like it did. I cleaned it numerous times and even rebuilt it and nothing. The guy I sold it to put a nozzle set in it and the pattern opened back up. I guess over time they get worn and need to be replaced. You will like the W400. All you have to switch is needle, nozzle, and aircap. Gun body and everything else is the same.
March 16, 2009 at 3:01 am #13378I hear what you are saying fellas.. No big deal either way.. Im glad the caps work for you, and/or different guns.. Years ago I used to have separate guns for everything, now I just use the same gun for base and clear.. Primer is still separate..
