Hi there guys I haven’t been around for a while but need some help please
I am painting a KIA picanto tomorrow and that I have pulled out the back end on,it’s got new rear bumper and o/s quarter repaired and in primer today.the bumper obviously meets both quarter panels /rear wings and also the tailgate shuts down and meets rear bumper so I think I need to paint n/s and o/s rear wings, rear bumper, tailgate and also o/s door !
Now here’s my problem we don’t have the greatest paint scheme (MIpa solvent ) and the colour is a tri stage pearl which for me is a challenge lol,now these colours dont seem to match well in MIpa so I have done 4 spray test panel cards but I couldn’t believe the first coat would not cover easy ! I think it took 10 coats to cover the black and White checkers on test card ! The first coat is a normal red really, then I put 1 coat of the topcoat on the first card 2 on second card 3 on 3rd and 4 on the 4th one then I cleared them all and left them to dry to see if I have anything close I can go with.have I gone about this correct ?
Next problem I have is application ? I need to cover the new bumper that is black and o/s rear wing that’s in 2k primer so do I just put the first stage on these parts followed by 2nd stage ? And where I need to blend but still have original paint I can just blend out the 2nd stage over the top of the scuffed clear ? I hope I have explained well enough for you to understand me sorry lol many thanks – Carl

Ok lots of questions here I will try to sort it out for you.New bumper should be selaed(pretty sure kia will be raw plastic) possibly your bodywork too if you have any slight burn thrus(if not finish sand 500-600) and go to paint. If you have the option of a sealer pic a medium gray .You should always put whatever sealer color or ground coat on your spray out card, that way you can reproduce it,the color won’t be the same if you don’t.I would use a ground coat(pick something from your toner system like a red oxide and tint it so it is in the ballpark) this will make your red cover quicker. It sounds kind of hacky but if all you are doing is the quarter and bumper, blend the rear door and don’t worry about the hatch or other quarter unless you get time to blend it all. Most bumpers don’t match at all(go look how close the front bumper matches) so I wouldn’t even worry about the match.Anything else and just ask :cheers

Thanks for your time Jason much appreciated ! I will check out my test card this morning mate to see how close it is and may take your advice on just doing bumper cover but am I right if I did blend where it meets the other panels I just flick the top coat (2nd stage ) in those areas ?

    Sorta 😛
Ok if you repaired your quarter and the repair is close to the door yes I would blend.I would not blend the tailgate or other quarter unless you are getting paid for it by insurance or customer pay.Not sure how much experience you have but blending a tri stage is different than just a regular color. Also I tried to explain about sealer or primer when doing a sprayout, the card must mimic what you do on the car,or the color will be different.I have no idea how good your system is with color match,so I will stop there.Do a search here about doing a tri stage blend,I wrote it out for someone but am too lazy to do it again  Good luck

Thank you Jason for help, well I had a quick lesson in blending a tri stage by learning the hard way trial and error lol, couldn’t get hold of our paint rep guy as he was training so went for it and it was ok which I was pleasantly surprised. I made an fatal error tho which when I think about it was a stupid and obvious error but we live and learn !
Well I blended the ground coat onto door next to rear wing I repaired, but only blended the top coat onto tailgate and the other quarter !!! Obvious to me now I should have blended ground coat too on tailgate and the rear wing on other side where bumper meets, the match is ok to tailgate and will get away with that no troubles but on the n/s rear wing it was like black and White lol !!! So I redid that rear wing again and I’m sure it’s well within acceptability.I’m actually quite confident now that I could cope well if another comes along ! It’s only when you do a colour like this that you learn from mistakes and that sticks in my mind for next time ! Many thanks again, carl
