This is a very low end single stage paint…I havnt used it but thinking of trying it…Anyone out there use this?..Its a urethane
single stage… I paint cars for $195 and have to cut costs
where ever possible…thanks
DennisJanuary 15, 2010 at 3:06 am #18646kirker urethane….hmmm, crappy but durable and doesn’t look that great at all but for $195 paintjobs its just the ticket and better than acrylic enamel. solvent pops kinda easy.
January 15, 2010 at 5:43 am #18651charge 500 then just prep em and take em to maaco for the 195 special. you’ll make more money that way 😉

sounds like ya know quite a bit about this subject jim :lol1 :lol1 :lol1January 15, 2010 at 4:29 pm #18661:rofl well, its been awhile but ive tried my share of kirker. the clear is the worst crap i’ve ever used. the ss black urethane i used to keep in the shop preflattened for little flat black parts like engine components, etc. works good for that and its cheap. i would never paint anything with it that needs to look really good. for $195 i dont even understand how he is doing it but who can expect anything really good for that price. i dont know of any other ss urethane that is $35 a gallon…or atleast it was when i used it.
January 15, 2010 at 6:56 pm #18666Mine is a small shop with very little overhead…A Advertise at
$195 for any car…I can do the ave car with a half gal..With
hardener and reducer that puts my material cost at $40-50..I
do all the painting and my wife does all the sanding and masking..Ill do the small dents and my son does the larger ones and the frame work…Most cars that come in always need extra work to
get them ready for paint…With an insurance job now and then and with my 2 stage jobs, I cant complain…I love what I do and I love the idea of a car coming in today and leaving tomorrow…my customers are not picky…Guys…the bottom line isnt what you get for your work, its how you have done at the end of the year…Ive had a shop here for 35 yrs and have never seen it this bad..Body shops are closing left and right…And I dont want to be one of those..So I do what I can to survive..
Dennismaybe u can paint for 195 but everything else is extra like masking, sanding, priming, etc. or you can just paint one type of car like a taxi for example and just specialize in that. seriously if you want to survive it isnt going to be by dropping prices. its like you suggested lowering overhead. or forget the whole 195 paint deal and just do top quality work for less. youll get more approvals and word of mouth business that way and become known for good work at better prices.
You CANT make money at 195.. Anyone with any good business sense knows that.. What is your net profit on each car? 10 dollars? I dont care if your overhead is only 500 a month, you cant make money.. This kind of crap work, business ethics is what is keeping this industry behind the times… Sorry guys, but I have been in business 12 year this kind of stuff makes me mad!
January 15, 2010 at 8:44 pm #18675Mo..I do well painting low end..And we dont charge extra for masking and sanding..There are body shop here that start at $500-
1000 that are going out of business..Old shops that do custom work
are closing..People dont have the money here..To Joe…There always has been a good market for the low end paints..There are just way too many folks that just dont have the money to pay $500-1000 for there 1991 Toyota..That they just sent
$600 to buy..Sorry you feel that way Joe, but I really feel that I am doing a needed service..Give the industry a bad name?…been doing this for 35 years and I just dont agree..

Dennis[/quote]500-1000 for a repaint? :lol1
Try doubling, or even tripling it a few times.I know shops around here that will charge a $500-1000 to fix a few scratches.
I don’t really get the 195 dollar Paint job thing.
I mean even if you can blow out a car a day. What are we talking here? Three employees. That breaks down to what? about 4 bucks an hour profit each?
And to be honest. I can’t imagine a 3 man shop putting out 365 cars a year.
And even if you could, you’re only talking 47 grand a year spread out between employees, shop costs, overhead… Seems near impossible even if you don’t have any overhead.I’ll be honest… If you came to me expecting a 195 dollar paint job. I’d grab the Ajax and a can of rustoleum… :wak
i know what ur talking about Jantxx when you say people dont have the money anymore. it used to be people would opt out of a new car and just repaint or repair the car they already have. but since leases have become more affordable many consumers choose not to spend the money anymore. i used to repaint a lot of private cars but that part of the business slowed down and now i mostly focus on giving fleets what they need… fast turnaround & long lasting repairs. the private cars i now do are all mostly collision jobs which to me are so much better profit wise and recently ive found a way to make lease return repairs profitable for us and affordable to the customer. basically your old strategy is dieing out. you need to find what customers are looking to spend money on since trends change with time.
