If you wouldnt mind posting up a break down of actual costs and profit on a 195 job.. I bet you will be amazed that you are actually losing money, unless you fudge the numbers. This business is about making a profit, while doing quality work.. Yes it can be done, is it tough sometimes, hell yes it is.. But at the end of the day if the shop is not making 10%+ net after all expenses I will close the doors.. So that means if you do 500k a year the shop should be making 50K+- after you pay everything, including yourself! Otherwise whats the point? You can go work at McDonalds and make 15 dollars an hour around here..
January 15, 2010 at 11:11 pm #18689I do realize this is a high end forum…Most are..I probably shouldnt be on here at all…I knew from the get go I’de be
flamed…I promise I’ll keep my comments to a minimin..And maybe try and pick up some hints from the pros…
Thanks
DennisI wouldnt say high end, and feel free to comment, I just want to understand a bit more how it works for you.. We have all done cheap paint jobs, cant say 195 cheap, but I have done some 1200-1500 dollar stuff years ago. I think its more about wanting people to understand this is still a business, if you can make a profit painting a car for 195 awesome, but if not whats the point? A lot of body shops are still not run like businesses. And as time goes on only the business savy will survive. You have to watch your numbers on every job.. You could come in my shop and I could tell you what my net profit is on every job.. Could you? I am willing to help anyone that ask..I have a few basic formulas that work very well to figure some of this stuff out.. Basically a plug and play..
High end? Sheesh… You obviously haven’t met Bondo.
To be honest I don’t think anyone is Flaming you.
I’m just amazed that painting cars for 195 and making profit is even possible.
I couldn’t paint a car for myself (Free labor) for those kinds of rates…Macco doesn’t even paint cars for that.
Yes they say they do. But they don’t. It’s called the bait and switch. Get you in the door, and explain to you all the reasons why you shouldn’t go with that one, you should go with this one and yada yada yada…Next thing you know your 195 dollar paint job that you saw advertised is nearly a grand.

actually i have enjoyed reading your posts 😉 dont worry about getting flamed here if any one is going ta get kicked in the balls its usually ding now that guy can hack :rofl :rofl :rofl :welc :welcJanuary 16, 2010 at 3:57 am #18696hmmm, the 53 ford truck i did last winter had $3500 in materials on it.
for each person in the shop you atleast be able to bill $500 for the day just to pay them, some materials, insurance and any other overhead. so this means you would need to pump out about 7-8 cars a day at your price. i just dont understand.
since this topic instantly went from kirker to profit lol i would like to comment that most of you guys are just throwing way too much money into materials. i mean do u really need to buy name brand lacquer thinner? or how bout buying a 100 dollar roll of masking paper? i was just driving home and i noticed that Earl Shcieb has a sign that says Complete Paint Jobs starting at $189. now if you thought 195 was crazy, look at who Jantxx is competing with. southern california is flooded with Earl Shciebs and hundreds if not thousands of other shops competing for business. so many shops offer high quality work for high prices and most ppl just want to paint a car so they can sell it. he has a market for inexpensive paint jobs so thats what hes specializing in.
Jantxx u’ll find better deals on materials if you find sources that offer deals on bulk purchases. (most do)
