I live in area where rust is a huge issue with vehicles. I want to start a thread where everyone can chime in with the tricks they learned over the years on dealing with this car cancer. Rust repairs are a hard sell because: a) they are not always easy to do. b) will come back someday (customers have a hard time understanding that one) and, c) not as cheep as people think. Any one have any info they would like give or have any experiences with any products good or bad? For instance, we switched our epoxy to Dupont 2580CR DTM Epoxy a few years ago and have had good results.

Rust will not come back if repaired properly. The only way to get rid of rust is, 1) cut it out and replace with new metal 2)REMOVE the rust by blasting or by an acid solution. By acid solution, I DO NOT mean a product you squirt on with a squirt bottle or rub on and it “converts” the rust or “stabilizes” it. That always kills me….”stable rust” :cens

After 1 of those are done, epoxy primer over the clean metal and will be fine longer than any of us will be alive. 😉

I also live in a area where rust is a major problem.Replacing the panel with a new one would be best but sometimes when thats not the case sandblasting is the ultimate rust killer, followed by properly cleaning with a wax and grease remover than an Acid etch or epoxy primer. Its important to get all exposed metal in primer as soon as possible because the moisture in the air can cause flash rust. And Stay away from those magical ” Rust Converters”, they can cause a paint job to fail.

I was told that I could use picklex on rust instead of sand blasting. As long as you don’t use an epoxy with acid in it it will hold up fine. I know of people using this method on 1/4 million dollar restos. Are you saying this is not correct???

yes. given that you only use Glasurit primer, you will have zero adhesion problems. :headsmack:
