    Hi,

I am helping a friend restore a 67 charger and there is few panels with alot of surface rust, I personally never done any restoration work and any small rust i cam across I just sanded off in the past.

My question is once all heavy rust is removed, can the rust remedy be painted straight over once it turns black. Some of the areas are difficult to get in at and it’d be handy if this was the case.

    Thanks

    Darren

rust has to be removed completely not painted over. if its surface rust its best to use a sand blaster to remove rust in the craters. if its holes, ull need to cut it out and weld in patches. when the metal is all smooth and rust free, prime it with epoxy primer 1st, then do the body work 2nd, followed with 2k high build last. dont use the rust converter stuff. pure crap

and when sand blasting isn’t an option …. a wire wheel on a grinder is an alternative. B)

Think of it this way, if you seal it with the rust stuff that’s out there the rust will just grow out the other side and rot out the bottom of that area. Either way, it will suck for someone that owns the car later on.
