What are you using in your shop for masking materials? We have been using american pg 27 3/4″, 1 1/2″For paper we use carborundum paint check(identical to norton) Also been using the carborundum/norton double roll 3/4″on the machine(that tape sticks like sh-t to a blanket). We really like the 3m 233+ tape but it is pricey.Just got a few rolls of new 3m yellow tape (388) to try, about half the cost of the green but feels the same.Anybody try something new??
August 2, 2009 at 6:29 am #15114haaa thats funny about the 3m stuff. i have always used the pg27 and their mg tape as well. like 3m green but as you said too pricy so i have just kept with the pg. the 3m rep was around about a month or 2 ago and showed me the new yellow tape which i really like and its priced really good so i am going to switch over to that. it is funny that you said it seems the same as the green…..because it is, just about anyway. the rep kinda let the cat out of the bag when i hammered him with some questions. he admitted the yellow has the exact same adhesive as the green. the only real difference to me is that the paper is just a touch thinner which is actually nicer because you can tear it off easier. other than that it is the green tape turned yellow at 1/2 cost. i have no proof but here is what it boils down to. 3m isn’t selling much green tape because its priced too high so instead of dropping the price on the green and admitting they have been screwing everyone for years they simply color it different, give it a different part # and bam they have a nice new product to sell you and they have admitted nothing and come out like the good guys for bringing out a great new tape at a good price!!! thats how 3m does it.
for paper i use mostly norton. their new finishing film, the q260 is really awesome. blows the 3m stuff away.
August 2, 2009 at 7:46 am #15117Use the Norton paint check paper and all Norton masking tape. That stuff sticks to anything. A good price to.

AnonymousAugust 3, 2009 at 4:46 am #15133I’ve been trying to lay off the dog chow paper lately, been using paper our jobber has private labeled. We use that and/or 3M plastic sheeting, 3M green 3/4″ and low end 1 1/2″. I’ve used the really low end 3M tape (less then half the cost of green) and honestly couldn’t care less what I was using. I think we still only have it because we got a deal on the green a while ago when we bought in massive bulk. When we go to water i think we’ll be going with 3M gold paper, i’ll have to look at the cost dif with the norton.
