Hi guys,

I have a customer coming in next week and wants a pair of mirrors painted on a 2004 Mazda 6 GT. They have the light in them I believe it is similar to the photo attached. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how the lights are usually removed on them, He informs me that a few shops have already told him they can’t disassemble them. Wondering if anyone was familiar with the design.

if you pull the mirror glass you can take em apart just be careful doing it plus its a bear stuffing the mirror back into all the sockets but yes its possible ive done quite a few an it is scary somtimes but ive never broke one ya just got to get it to snap outa the pivot an dont pry on the glass

I figured the glass needed to come out, what are my odds of breaking the clips/pivots in the process? Do you just turn the glass and use plastic pry stick or can you wiggle it free by hand?

Throw them in the booth during a bake to warm em. Plastic titties like yanking more when they are nice and toasty.

They are powered mirrors. There are 4 sets of tabs that pivot the mirror. The tabs are inserted onto the X – Y mirror motor.

Once the glass comes off, you’ll be faced with removing the motor which I believe is another 4 tabs.

Once this is out you should be able to pull the motor and wiring out. This project may further be complicated if they are the power folding mirrors….but I cannot be certain.

This will allow you access to the lights. If my memory serves me correctly…there is 4 screws. This should release the light.

As far as the painted cover….I believe this is glued into place. It is not a silicone glue which can be baked open like a headlight…so it may take some persuasion or a good masking job.

I have pics of when I broke my mirror that I can post, and I will try to break mine apart when I get home, and make a how-to for you.

    Here are the pics.

There are indeed the 4 tabs that can be reached with a slender, long slot screw driver.

The LEDs come out with a hair dryer and gently pressed from the outside.

Just thought I’d toss up an update. Got them all disassembled, painted & put back together, the glass came out pretty easy (the lights didn’t, but got er done). Thanks again for the help.
