I know larger flakes have to be buried with a couple extra layers of clearcoat, then sanded flat, before spraying candy layers.
Is the burying + sanding necesary too with mini flakes or can you skip this and start directly with the candy?
(Flake size 0.004″ / 0,1mm)(I will use 2K clearcoat as a carrier of the mini flakes, sprayed over a silver base).
February 11, 2014 at 8:30 am #45904yes i do it with .004. i dont do it with .002 though. if they arent buried then the candy likes to hang around the flakes making each flake look darker. same as if you had a dist speck in your metallic base color. the candy would make the dirt speck dark and stick out.
I just spoke someone who says that with his specific method, burying 0.004 isn’t necesary.
What he does isn’t spraying the flakes in a (clearcoat)carrier, but after some initial layers of basecoat he over-reduces the basecoat 25% and then add 1 gram flake to each 10 grams of base. Spray two coats with this mixture and then hop, candy.
This ofcourse only with 0.004 or smaller. With larger flakes he always use a carrier and buries with clear before candy.
