Im doing some research on vacuum systems to keep sanding dust down. The self generating sanders seem to be the cheapest option and I like that they don’t require an extra hose. Im not going to run vacuum lines throughout the shop so that leaves the options being the self generated sanders, the floor unit that connects to the sander, and those big floor standing vacuum units that vacuum dust out of the air.

Any experience/information you can share on any of these setups id appreciate! Thanks

I used the 3M system with the purple paper and vacuum bag that hooks to it a few years ago. It worked well, I’d say it performed as advertised. The only thing is I’ve never costed it out,. if your spending $200 / year on replacement filters it may not be accurate to look at is as a $180 sander. The sanders have lasted several years and are still operating at my previous shop today, however they gave up on changing the filter bags so it’s kind of a pointless for them.

Lidle do a pretty good one for £24.99 and it has a three year warranty ,the pad is a bit hard but cant really fault them and the self vac works well

i have 3 of the 3m sanders here with the filter bags. i used the the bags and purple discs for all of 3 days. after that i took a rubber plug and stuck it in the air output of the sander and never used it since. it works great for all of 5 minutes. as soon as the bag gets a slight amount of dust in in them they are clogged and the whole system doesnt work anymore. you literally have to change bags every 2-3 pieces of sandpaper. the whole system sux. you really need a powered vacuum of some sort for any sander. all these bag systems are a bunch of bs.
