I called my local supplier a while back to get a price on a Red Jewel Tintcoat (301N,80,GAQ,WA301N) and in Dupont it was a 2 stage and in RM Diamont it was a tri stage. I read on one site that someone had a tri stage code and called Dupont and they were able to give him a code for doing it in a 2 stage. Has anyone done this or heard of it?

That is fairly common with many tri stage colours (just not whites).

Only caution I would give is to use a ground coat of something similar or use a tinted (or value shaded primer). Some can be very transparent.

All paint systems are different, basf is famous for having tri stage formulas for colors that are just a 2 stage. Now don’t get confused here but some systems will have a 2 stage formula for a 3 stage to do jambs etc but the color match will suffer. Now for example the new camaro synergy green and wa301n that you are describing are a 2 stage formula in sikkens and they match perfectly.

As above, I’ve seen some colours down as 3 stage on one scheme and 2 stage on another.

I’m with Ben on this one… Color is color ! If it matches great, be sure to do a spray out. However, a 2 coat conversion most likely has a lot of pearls in it and will not cover very well.
