I want to know what you guys do when you are doing a full car restoration with all the panels off the car. I like to paint the hood, trunk, fenders and all the misc pieces off the car and reinstall them at the end. My questions is, how do you hang the doors with out messing up the door pillar when you try to align it up after the jamb and hinges are painted? You have to loosen the bolts several time to get the door gaps perfect. So I have been hanging the doors after I get them straight before painting.
They come out alright but I think I could get them to really look good off the car.
Do you apply a few layers of tape and install the doors and remove one hinge at a time and remove the tape? I have thought of doing it that way but worry that the door will sag or droop a little even with a jack under the door.
When doing collision or when we did completes I usually just hang them first to get
alignment and index them to get them where I need so on reassembly I can be really close.
Then make sure the paint is very dry/hard before I think of attempting to hang them so if
there is any minor adjustments they don’t get scratched to heck…Of course, my prefrence (for this sake) has been to paint them with the doors on and open
(which I know is not always an option)…June 22, 2010 at 5:38 am #22021Hang your doors in primer. Take a scribe and trace the door hinge. and then remove. Take a punch and mark top, and inside left. Don’t even let me see an 1/8 inch hole drilled in the hinge! LOL!
