so ive never done a whole car in matt black untill a few days ago, i thought god damnit another overall but atleast it should be fool proof, when i finish theres a noticeable stripe in the roof and hood, my boss and i decide to reshoot it, now theres tiger stripes, i used a single stage matt black ( sc804 )the basf rep told me to be sure to lay it down evenly, i proceed to do so, it looks perfect, i let it flash for 15 mins and i find there to be tiger stripes in the hood and roof, the rest of the car looks as good as matt black can, i used our devilbis plus, WTF. i think next time ill just bc/cc it with a flat black cc formula. :teach
had similar problems when i sprayed buick enclave moldings. i did a clear semi gloss. not the same product as what u used. but my problem was not getting it mixed up good. resanded and shaked the hell at of the clear and it layed down great. not a fan off eggshell and semigloss…. bc u cant buff it!!!
i hear yah on the the no buff, the first shoot i did the right quarter was rapped with nibbs (thats probably cause i had the booth doors open into the prep station, not enogh room in the booth to paint the doors off so i could get the jams) guess thats what i get for trying to be diligent about it.
January 14, 2013 at 7:22 am #40372Ive done alot of matte finish from bc/cc to ss. And prob the most unforgiving when comes to techinque. I use a 3000hvlp with 1.4 tip helps with the striping, you also got to keep the edges wet on ss and Iwata supernova for clears.
I sprayed a 2500hd suburban matte black which was fun ended up spraying roof by its self and the hood off the truck.
I’m basf guy to, but I use the John derre tractor paint blitz black now on matte blacks. Spraying a 1985 Chevy crew cab dually this week matte black with gloss black and brushed metal finished accents.
January 14, 2013 at 7:38 am #40374Utech 200 single stage mixed with flattening blender is effortless to spray with no striping. It also works very well in reproducing semi gloss, eggshell etc sheens for restos and with all colors for house and garage doors.
