Hello everyone! im new to refinish network and i would like to show you all a few pictures of the car i did body work on and painted all myself! i had no actual practice before so it was pretty much my first time spraying! please let me know your thoughts on it! 😀
Attachments:November 14, 2010 at 5:48 am #25138Thanks! i used omni plus paint! i didnt really like it, it didnt seem to have enough pigment! for clear i used omni 161, i also didnt like it, but i used a little reducer and it made it great! and i sprayed it with a buddys iwata lph-400lvx! the extreme basecoat one!
November 14, 2010 at 9:08 pm #25140looks good to me. I know what you mean about crappy coverage. My first paint job was a dark silver, and after 4 coats of base it still wasn’t hiding when I pulled it outside…
With painting over the old paint and the grey primer, a value-shaded sealer would have helped tremendously.
One of the reasons cheaper paints are so cheap is because of the cheaper pigments which usually makes for poor coverage. However, if 4 coats of the red was able to hide all that, that really isn’t too bad.
Good job nonetheless. Glad to see you removed most parts before painting, makes for a much better job!
November 15, 2010 at 5:02 am #25142Thanks alot! surprisingly it only took about 2 1/2 coats of paint to cover up the primer! ill post more pictures as soon as i go to school and take all the paper off and see how it came out!

I got a gallon of martin senour sealer a couple years ago when I was starting my first paint job, but it’s pretty dark gray. almost black. Do you have to have some special sealer ‘base’ that you add black tint to to get the right value?

you just need a tintable sealer or primer. i think the maximum amount of tint is 10%. they save lots of time and material

If they are not tintable, then you usually buy black (dk grey) and white sealer. Then mix them in the proper ratio to get the correct value (shade of grey). Read the tech sheet for the product you are using and it will explain this if it is capable of being used as such.
November 17, 2010 at 6:07 am #25188looks good, i’m not sure how you paint a car in 2 1/2 coats, but thats very good coverage for base. how many coats of clear did you put on?
as for value shades, i have 3 different sealers, white, grey(primer grey) and black.
and you’ll use 7 different shades to achive max. hideing.
v1-v4- you’ll mix the white with the gray certain ratio
v6- you’ll mix the grey and black.November 19, 2010 at 1:23 am #25211my plan was to put only 3 coats of clear, but i ended mixing too much and i had quite some left over so i decided to just spray another coat! and ill look into the sealers! i still dont know much about them!
