I’m looking to buy an orbital sander or DA, but not sure which ones are the best for all around use such as knocking down bondo and final feather edging, I don’t have the money to buy to different ones at the time. I’ve used the ND sander with a handle, I like it because u can lock it and use it as a grinder and the hutchins palm sander, which i like because it featger edges quite well . And like them both. But I would most likely go with a hutchins with a handle if i were to choose hutchins, any help?
February 20, 2012 at 6:22 am #35915Man you guys steered me into a total different path 😆 but I will surely look at these in a moment. Any problems with longevity?
February 20, 2012 at 7:12 am #35919Thats not a bad price but for $15 more you can have the silver supreme that is made in the states 😉 It all depends on your expectations but that is a good option.
The Hutchins is a good solid tool, but it is really heavy, bulky and outdated. I think most people (including myself) would recommend the Dynabrade. I’ve used the 3M a fair bit and it is nice as well. I do own a Chicago Pneumatic and it is a nice tool like the others.
At the end of the day, however, I would bet that the Dynabrade will last longer than the others, and they are easy (and relatively cheap) to service when the time comes.
I own ND and Hutchins DA’s Im also looking to get newer sanders as mine are 10+ years old only had to replace the bearing head on the ND once only because it had be dropped. I to have been looking at the Dynabrade and the 3M just don’t know yet which one I want…..
I use the ND one just purely for fast material removal only as it is a hog and will strip a panel in no time
the hutchins is my final sander has a nice balanced feel to it I could run it with one finger on the paddle. but its outdated like others mentioned and I would like to get a nicer one for clearcoat sanding.
I figure I will have to buy atleast two sanders.
I have two snap-on da palm sanders. They work great and are little and light. They are on the pricey side but have lasted for years with no oiling. I don’t use them that much anymore because i switched to the newer 3m palm sander that has the vacuum bag. It has the short 3/16 throw for color sanding. With this da to work correctly you have to buy the correct hokit one paper with the holes in it. Probably not and an option for you but it really is awesome imho.
February 20, 2012 at 6:24 pm #35930Ok I will look at the different options today and see which is best, I probably won’t be color Sanding with it. My main use for it will be for final Sanding such as feather edging or panel blending. Is the 3/16 throw good enough for this?
The 3/16 throw is for all paint work. All it does is help not make little swirl sand scratches. Da’s with this shorter throw are said to be painters da’s. So you say you want a glass surfaces and your not gonna use a da to color sand…. I guess you better learn how to block wet sand really good then. Do you know what color sand means? Just a question. I’m not a confronting you.
