Hi I am new here and this is my first post.
I have an old BMW E36 sedan model that has developed some rust problems on the bottom kick panels behind the wheels. Leaves and debris collect in there and keep moisture in the area so eventually some parts have rusted through. I have side skirts I am going to put on to cover this area once i figure the proper way to attach them, but i am going to fix the rust first so I don’t have any latent problems under neath.
Last fall what i did was remove chunks of the badly rusted area, wire brush to bare metal, treated with Extend to neutralize remaining flecks of the rust, primer and then a coat of paint to preserve it until I can deal with it this spring. I did this on one side and it looks like it has held up pretty well and by that I mean the rust doesn’t seem to have reappeared. The side i didn’t do anything to is worse than the first side by far so obviously I should have done both sides.
My question is I am going bondo repair the rust perforated piece and I have never done the bondo thing before so can i just scuff up the painted repair and apply bondo or do I have to go back and attempt to get back to bare metal again and then apply bondo? Like I mentioned ultimately all of this will be covered by a side skirt so I figure i can learn a skill here and cosmetically it doesn’t have to be perfect.

June 13, 2012 at 5:55 am #371563M makes a nice plastic abrasive that will remove everything and clean the metal , clean and condition metal and then epoxy prime. when primer dries scuff and glaze with a good body filler then surface ,seal and paint
