I have a 94 ford f-150 xls and i am planning on painting it metallic black
I need to know some options from different ppl
1. what grit sandpaper do i need to use to sand the first color the car already is
2. what kind of primer should i use.
3. what kind of base color should i use (i was thinking this one http://www.paintforcars.com/aep_metblack.html)
4. what kind of clear coat
5. what kind of cleaner
6. all the sandpaper grits ill need and when to use them
7. and anything else i am missingI am doing this in my garage and im going to have plastic up so no over spray of dust will get in and i will have a vent system but not a very good good one
I want to do this my self so don’t tell me to get someone professional to. i am asking to learn what to do and im not planning on doing this job soon.
and if you have any hints or tricks i would like to know
well you really biting off alot for what your level of experience but you gotta start some where …. I like your spunk but there are many ways to tackle a job of this size ….. and I hope you have the garage for a while if your just starting …. can you post some pictures? and :welc … you’ll also be here for a while :pcorn:
August 29, 2009 at 8:27 pm #15576well i haven’t started the job yet im just planning it out
and i want to do this right and get a good paint job
iv been reading a lot about painting cars but i still am missing stuff
like sanding
i get most the painting but the only thing im missing there is what kind of tips ill need and stuff like that
i know with metallic you do a pass from left to right and then up to down to get it to look right
what kind of pics do you mean
of my truck or the garagepics of your truck would help so I/we can walk you through it.
In this trade/art it’s proper to plan a procedure (know where your going start to finish before you start)
first thing will be wash and dismantle every thing your going to remove (bumpers ,,doorhandles,,etc,)
then locate the spots needing the immediate attention. |(dents , rust , etc,) sandblasting , grinding , and 40/80 grit work then …….. :pcorn:
August 29, 2009 at 10:14 pm #15579Here are some pictures and all of the body damage to the car but I’m planning on putting all new panels on the front (both side quarter panels, and hood)
the car has no rust at all
when my mom bought the truck the body was perfect i caused the damage when i went off the road into a 3 ft ditch and the front end flexed and went back in place the frame is fine.I am a real fast learner and i get things real easy just first got to know what to do and how to

http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g244/guitarplayer3y/SANY0017.jpgAugust 31, 2009 at 12:46 am #15591everything is fine its the hood that is the only thing out of alignment and thats cause off the mounts and that one fender is twisted
and no im going to get rid of that color completely thats why im painting it
im making it metallic blackAugust 31, 2009 at 3:28 am #15596well im replacing all the fenders and hood and hood mounts
the first think though is what grit sand paper do i need to start sanding with and end with before the primerAugust 31, 2009 at 3:53 am #15597if you are replacing all the damaged parts what do you need primer for. if the rest of the truck is in good condition wet sand it with 600, scuff the jambs with a scotch pad. then seal and paint it. if you need to do some minor body repair then check out jimmo’s videos and links
http://www.refinishnetwork.com/uncatagorized/training-courses.htmlbody work can be finished off in 180 grit put you need to feather the surrounding areas before priming
August 31, 2009 at 4:12 am #15598well the paint has some chips in it down to the metal in some places what do i do about that
AnonymousAugust 31, 2009 at 5:12 am #15600Sand them down to the metal, feather the paint, prime, block sand. If you want to cheat you could just fill it with spot putty, not the proper way.
