By the way is your Garage attached or a detached garage?
If its attached ISOCYANATES will harm others in the house!

There is another web sight that is more into helping the first timer.
Do searches youll find all the info your looking for PLUS!

    http://www.autobody101.com 😉

I would head Stones advice and go slow and small youll enjoy it more and it wont cost as much as fast. 😉

A Good Base coat clear coat job will run $1000 plus in just materials alone did you know that?
Yes it can be done cheaper but not with good quality products. :exci

What kind of compressor do you have? HP and CFM
Do you have a water drier system?
How about a water separator?
Do you have a Good DA?
What kind of paint gun do you have now?
How about a Buffer and Pads + all the compounds?
How about a good assortment of Sanding Blocks But you can use paint sticks.

    Materials needed
    Soap
    Wax and grease remover
    Sandpaper
    Primer
    paint
    Clear
    Buffing pads
    Compounds
    And a lot more!

    DA Sand Paper
    80 grit
    180 grit
    320 grit

Hand Blocking Paper sold in and by the sheeth
    400, 600, 1000 grit
    1500, 2000, 2500 grit for final

Harbor Freight does sell all this above cheap be prepared you will use 10X as much as a good Hi quality Paper like 3M or other High Quality Sand pappers. But you can try using it I guess.

Sand Paper suggestions are just my recomendations for a beginner and not necessarily what a Pro like Stone or what the other guys may say and may recommend.
But should get you going in an OK direction. :silly:

    Do your home work! :exci
Read about all this stuff first ! :exci
Buy all your materials and tools First and have it all on hand! BEFORE YOU START! 😉

Start with getting all your equipment up too snuff FIRST! You get what you pay for here buy good Hi quality stuff the first time! IMHO

Like a compressor, a tiny 5hp Sears with a 20 gallon tank isn’t going to cut it IMHO a 7hp 220v powered 60-80 gal unit would be good about $1000 on up. Get the Biggest baddest one you can afford the FIRST time! Youll be glad you did!
    Don’t forget a good Air pressure Regulator! about $100 + -.

Then a good Oil/Water separator/Drier system! and a good Water drier is a must! Prices are all over the place buy a good one IMHO! about $50-$3000 Here again you get what you pay for!

A good DA will help a lot! too, You can get a good one for about $100 on up!.

Then you need a Good Paint gun, Astro sells good cheap guns from what I understand, about $50-$80.
I use DeVillbiss gun’s I would suggest a Devilbiss FLG3 with the 3 tip option about $150. Not the best by far you get what you pay for! Most of the Guy’s here are using top of the line guns $500-$700 range. I like my FLG3, GTI and My 670 Plus guns.
Don’t forget a good air pressure gage for at the gun!

A Good Buffer like Dewalt or Makita about $200, yes Auto body tool mart and others sell el cheapo’s for $80 but its hit or miss for a good one that it wont burn out in the middle of the first job.
Don’t forget a good assortment of Buffing Pads! about $100
Lake country makes and sells really good ones cheap 5-10 each.

New fresh CLEAN OIL FREE Air hoses! for the Paint gun $50

That’s lot of junk for one paint job isn’t it?
    Just some suggestions

It’s true It really comes down to. if you think you’re going to save money by painting your car yourself.
    You’re wrong! Very very wrong!

You’ll have to put out 2-4 projects before you can say you even broke even.

Hell, I thought the same thing.
“I can paint my car for less”
Now look at me. 6 years and about 35k in equipment and tools later.
And my car still isn’t painted. :rofl

    Isnt it the Truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    September 1, 2009 at 11:44 pm #15639

Damn!! You guys trying to scare the kid? I say turn him loose with an old Binks #7 and stand back. All kidding aside…they’re right. Man, you can do what ever you want to your truck but if you want a good quality job that’s done right you need a ton of practice. Not just spraying. You need to know how to prep a vehicle. A good paint job is only as good as the prep work done before the spraying. You might be able to take a night class to give you a better idea of what you’re getting into. Whatever you decide to do, take the correct safety precautions when using this stuff. IT WILL KILL YOU! None of this stuff is good for your body. I’m not trying to preach to you. I’ve just seen too many guys go down way before their time. Have fun and good luck…

I’m all for him jumping in and doing it! Heck that’s how I started and my first job turned out good if I do say so myself and I’m a Picky SOB TOO!
Just every thing I learned in that first try though well I ended up Buying all the wrong stuff including the Air Compressor and doing every thing wrong and redoing it and buying all the real stuff to finish the job right! Not too mention all the problems associated with the job of painting an Old car/Truck with prior body damage.

I’m just trying to give him a head start on the learning curve. :woohoo: Wish some one would have told me 10 years ago! :S Even then I wouldn’t have believed them either though! I had too try it my way first! 😛 only then did I believe!

After looking at his Truck well its obvious by what he shows he doesn’t like that he wants a nice job and all.
And in order too do a nice job in a TIMELY fashion wouldn’t you agree that my list is at least close to the bare minimums? :pcorn:

If I am giving the Guy wrong info please tell him and me I hate to give out the wrong info after all I DO NOT KNOW IT ALL I’m just a beginner too!
