Anyone know what’s going on for sure? I’ve heard so many rumors it’s not even funny. Only thing I know for sure is you have to take a course on the handling of paint and get certified. Other than that I’ve heard all sorts of rumors. One of them being a home built booth will not be accepted. Any truth to that? Well let’s hear what you guys know. Thanks.

here is a link to the epa’s final rule on it. you gotta get your cert, you have to register your shop, your spray equiptment has to be hvlp and you have to keep on file proof that your exhaust filters are 98% efficient or better. if your not spraying in a booth then you are limited to a 3oz. cup

I wonder technically what’s classified as a booth though? Does it have to be a “store bought” booth? Homemade? Even a exhaust fan in your garage? It’s technically a 4 walled enclosure right?

I just took the class a few weeks back through PPG. Pretty good waste of an afternoon, but at least I got a new certificate to hang on the shop wall.

As far as a home booth goes…how are they giong to know you have one 😛 Its not like the epa is going to be going door to door. I wouldnt be spraying two or three cars a day in it though. The neighbors could cause you some trouble.

My shops will be getting the trarnning in the next few weeks.. seems that the paint store can put the classes on and get us up to speed… just more shit to make us pay for a permit….

a booth wouldn’t have to be store bought it just needs to meet the guidlines listed in that ruling link….pg2 top right corner. how the booth is made would be more of a local govt. thing. if they let you spray in it then no problem. if your kinda painting under the radar so to speak i would not worry about any of it but i would go get my cert and make sure all the rules are atleast followed except registering the shop.

Yea I read thru the link you posted. Seems like aslong as it’s negative pressure and your filters are 98% efficient your ok. Like you said the rest is up to the locals. And when I said home built booth I didn’t mean at home. I have a place of business. I do paint work but I dont do much for the public. I mostly rebuild vehicles to sell. But it doesnt matter I still have to go by the rules like a shop obviously.

Good luck, I have been trying to comply. I have gotten certified, and even bought a new booth from Tools USA ($7000+) only to find out from the county when applying for permit to put the booth together that I am not zoned commercial. They tell me I have to shut down for 6 month to go thru the rezoning process. Whats next?
