 Hello Gents ,I have been in the interior business for some time now and spray water base color on leather and vinyl …..and I have decided to do a custom paint job on my Lincoln Navigator it was in a rear end accident recently and my question is how long do I have to wait with fresh paint before I can scuff the surface to re-paint ?
Thought I would show some of my work to you all …:-)
Attachments:Nice looking seat, and welcome to the site!
As far as scuffing/repainting goes, check the tech sheet for the products you are using. There are a lot of variables. Some faster products can be scuffed and painted after only a few hours. Others may be a day or more. If you are coating with something completely different or very aggressive (chemically) you may need to wait anywhere from several days up to a month.
Do you know the materials you have in mind?
Thanks for the reply….I would like to do a subtle black with a pearl green like a dark forest green ,Base coat Clear Coat . As far as products go I am open for suggestions if there is one that makes the pearl easier to work with? And I thought I would buy a new gun for the occasion because from what I am reading here seems the better guns do a nicer job with the metallic colors ? And I have shot base coat clear just not a SUV before LOL so don’t know how much product it might take
A lot of the clears I have used it’s ok to Prep and Re-apply immediately after cool down (if baked). However, it tends to still be kinda soft and you may have issues with sand-scratches showing, esp if using a scuff pad. With most clears as long as it’s hard and won’t fingerprint you are probably ok to prep. If in doubt, you can always check the TDS for the product you are using.
Also, as far as product suggestions- it all depends. Solvent is prob more user friendly, DuPont, and PPG DBC are both pretty easy lines to use. As far as a base gun the Tekna Prolite is the best base gun I have used with waterborne- and it’s priced better then the SATAs. I have not used it with solvent but understrand it performs just as well.
Thanks Sage, I appreciate the advice 😉 …..Do you know how much product I will need as they say more is better than running out I was thinking on a large SUV like this a Gallon of base and Gallon of clear and pint of the pearl I will have to blend to my liking ? Sound right to you ?
On a navigator id expect to use a full gallon on an overall, if not more. It really depends but if you are doing this at home you are prob going to want to do 3 coats since I imagine you will be doing some cutting and buffing. I would buy 2 gallons just to be safe. Running out of clear in the middle of clearing a job is tragic. You may not end up needing the second one, but you can always return it or keep it around for the future. As far as base goes- that really can vary a lot. I don’t exactly understand what you are trying to do. Are you wanting to change the color of the whole truck? Do you plan on doing all your jambs and undersides? Coverage is also an issue, with some colors you end up needing to way more coats then with others. Are you wanting to do a tri-stage, or just a pearl 2 stage?
Sorry Sage I guess I am not good with the terminology….my truck is black already and I wanted to do a “pearl 2 stage” that’s what I meant buy putting the green pearl in with the back and reshooting the whole thing I really don’t think its necessary to shoot the jambs as its black already ? I just want a subtle green theme as I have done a lot to the truck trying to show off what we can do in our business customized the whole interior and added some if I may say interesting green LED’s 😛 So I am open for suggestions and thanks again for your input I will up load some pics too so you can see it .
I did a diamond quilt on the seats and new carpet sued headliner hard to see in the darkness also custom grill and you can see where the new exhaust will come through the body I got Wicked Flow stainless tips and stainless muffler should open up the back nice :exciAttachments:If it were me, in your situation, I wouldn’t bother doing the jambs. As long as the truck is still going to be black, it’s so subtle that it’s not worth the ton of extra labor and materials. If you are planning on doing the bumpers with the truck you will prob need about a gallon and a half of sprayable (already reduced) base. As long as you are gonna reduce the base by yourself a gallon should be plenty. I would not buy pearl separate- talk to the PBE jobber and have them find a factory code that is close to what you are looking for. There will be an OEM code that will work for what you want, and using an OE color will make your life way easier, in case you need paint in the future. Just mixing in pearl by hand will be a disaster if you need to re-shoot down the line, if say, you get in an accident. It will make you or the tech that fixes the cars life hell trying to match the custom color. Just my personal opinion.
