Hello, Does anyone out there have any experience with applying the dreaded Nissan KAB? I’ve successfully painted a few of them in solvent, but now that our shop has converted to water, it looks like I’m going to have to start all over. Has anyone done this color in waterbase? We’re a Glasurit shop btw.

Yeah, I’ve done a couple in Sikkens Autowave.

Bigest issue is getting the base on even, allowing it to dry and applying thin coats of clear. What I’ve done is put two real thin coats on, allow it to dry overnight, come back and cut it a bit to take out some texture then apply two normal coats of clear and call it done.

Thanks Red Baron. Does Sikkens use a ground coat under the KAB? Also, were you having to color after your first clear coat had been sanded in order to get that texture free look to the base? I do plan on playing with some old panels first, I’m just looking for some heads up in advance. Thanks again.

Hi i went to spies hecker training centre in stevenage here in the uk to mess around with a few new trends in colours and one of them was nissan KAB. and a Mercedes 047 that was similar.
We used it in waterbase permahyd and it comes factory packed so tinting a colour is not possible. The panels we painted were painted in black spectroflex primer and laquered, then they were baked and then flatted again with 1000 dry on a da then 3000 trizact so they smooth (no texture) and with a slight sheen cause spies KAB wont cover the prep marks of anything under 3000 trizact. Do your sprayouts to determine amount of base and coverage (like 3 stages).
Although practising on panels isnt doing a whole side or front end but we had an insight, I dont think this colour is that common in the UK as in the US and as yet havent had the pleasure to paint one at work.
All seems straight forward enough but will take twice as long and have to be thorough with your prep and blends.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen it to be honest.

Looking on the DeBeer ICRIS system it just seems like any other silver. I guess I’m missing something!

Its a special order on the nissan skyline bit like the old platinum finish on ally wheels where the black isnt quite covered by the silver giving a metal type look, its an ultra fine silver and spies hecker permahyd version retails according to the training centre manager at £360 half a litre! Didnt even look that special in my opinion.

Ah right, I know the sort of thing you mean.

Let’s hope I never have to do one in DeBeer as there are no remarks about ground coats or anything, and the formula looks nothing special – pretty much the same as Peugeot EZR

    Guess I’ll be trying a sprayout tomorrow….

Like a lot of ‘special’ paint finishes, its not long before the paint companies bring out a straight forward 2 stage finish to replicate the original. I guess depends on what tinters you have on the scheme nothing spies has is fine enough.
