all the onyx(basf) users what guns are you useing to apply your h2o base< tip size and air caps as well, iam currently useing iwatas lvx purple cap 1.4 needle, and just switched to hybride super nova gold cap 1.4, 16-18 psi at the gun on both guns drop it about 4 psi on ortiation coats w/ needed, i have been a sata guy for a long time, stil use 1 to spray 55 line and single stages, basf recomends like a 1.6 if useing a sata w/onyx seems big, havent been able to find 1 to try, i had asked ? in the past no response..... please chime in what about the tekna guns ,used this when spraying some lesonal water demoes worked really nice , the onyx does like to go w/1.3 tip
AnonymousNovember 5, 2011 at 6:11 pm #34033I’ve been using an Iwata LPH-400 with a 1.4 (lvx orange cap) and its worked fine. The other painter at our shop uses a Tekna and previously a CVI, both worked well. I am pretty sure he had a 1.3 but I’ll have to double check that. Definitely no bigger then 1.4. I questioned my rep about the 1.6 recommendation and he told me it was to big… i don’t get it either. I don’t imagine that purple cap will perform particularly well, its designed for really challenging high metallic/pearl colors and supposed to be sprayed at a really low pressure. If you have the regular silver cap still I’d try that instead for now.

Maybe this will help.
I’d think a 1.6 would be difficult to throttle down and the risk of pooling and runs would be great. Never mind that you may have a hard time with color accuracy.
ive been spraying onyx for almost a year now. i started with a 3000 hvlp but since then i have bought two new iwatas. i have the purple cap for hard colors and the orange for most anything else. i just use the 3000 for solids now. all are 1.3 heads. with the purple cap you really have to slow down but it sprays nice. i wasnt so sure about the water at first but its really become easy and the color match is great!
I use onyx too but I only do small repair and use the lph80 but had a kind of off topic question but it applys to onyx users… First off I clean all guns by hand and use 909 for base and can get pretty pricey so was wondering if u can dilute it with distilled water and what ratio if so? Thanks in advance
November 16, 2011 at 5:35 am #34229cvi with 1.3 for metallics and a techna with a 1.5 and a base coat air cap for solid colours
November 29, 2011 at 10:52 pm #34414are you applying a drop coat on all metalics ??? iam doeing a blue metalic now,, toyota 8r5 have 3 coats and looks real good, iwata super nova hybrid 1.4 gold air cap 16 psi
November 30, 2011 at 1:41 am #34415also what base 002 or 004 and o20,040 reducer, iam painting in a cross flow w/ radiant heat above the booth booth temp-stays between 68-75 degrees
When I started spraying it I was using an lph400 1.4 with an orange cap but always seemed to fight the blends with high metalic colors. I switched to an ls400 1.4 w/ the gold cap and it was a night/day difference. An added bonus was the much faster drying time with the ls.
I mix everything with the 002 and use the 020 in solid colors and 040 in metalics.
April 25, 2012 at 1:01 am #36735I’m spraying onyx for 3 years now. I use a Sata 3000 hvlp with a 1.5
April 29, 2012 at 8:56 pm #36794Used Onyx twice and got decent results , with a Sharpe Platinum 1. 4 setup laid flat with no peel or runs !
